My wife & I share a coat tree in our bedroom. Enough of her stuff taking over! Time for my own coat tree

490004

490005 Red rose beading plane in use

490006 A double bead on the edges will fancy it up

490007 I will do this on all 4 edges.

Beads look really good. Plane appears to work well. You’re off to a good start.

Nice work Mark. Your only problem is that "SHE" will take over the finished product, have 2, and you will still be SOL. :D

Well done. Useful item. Don’t see them much anymore. They could be found in the front hall of nearly every house in years past.

Fortune is my friend on this. Candy is at least a foot shorter than me. If the hooks are high enough, she can't reach them.

Thanks Jim. To be safe add 6 inches to the tree and you will be definitely safe:)

My sister in law loved the coat tree so I made her one in white birch. I modified the base - the original plans and my first coat tree had the vertical tree supports glued and screwed to the bottom and the screws
were visible. I decided to countersink the lower screw from the bottom and drill up into the vertical base support. For the top screw I counterbored the hole, and then made a plug and glued that in after using a screw. Maybe some Christmas presents.

Looks great. Do you put some pads on the feet to help when on uneven floors? Or is the bottom concave? Small enough footprint, it might not matter?

And I hope "yours" stays yours-lol!

Good suggestion Chris. I put some pads on my first one, and I am going to put pads on this. On hardwood, without the pads, there is a little bit of rocking.

Mark,

One more "nicely done" on the coat tree. The double bead on the corners dresses it up a lot.

Apparently Dave and I had the same thought. I thought that if you made it that nice that it might become her coat tree and you would inherent the other. Oh well, either way keeping the new one or inheriting the old one you still have one of the two, so you are ahead of what you were with either case.

Regards,

Stew

My dad made one in high school shop class about 1928. A few years ago I refinished it for my wife.

Then I made a lamp to match.

Your father did a a great job on the coat tree Tom...I like what he did for the base with the ends touching the floor but not the center...as Christopher Charles alluded to earlier in the thread, mine rocks a bit on a slightly unlevel floor...I put some pads on the end which took care of the problem. Your refinish job looks very nice and I like your matching lamp. I think there were less closets 100 years ago, and more need for coat trees back then, especially when you entered the front door. We are enjoying ours in our bedroom.

It’s nice ! I would just suggest adding a small wooden lineman , radio hanging from safety belt blaring the Glen Campbell song. And ….
whenever she is listening to it , I would out sing him !
