View Full Version : Michigan Creekers: February 25th Lunch

John Bailey
01-25-2006, 4:04 PM
OK Folks, here's the plan. We'll meet at La Seniorita Restaurant at 11:30 A.M. for lunch. A web-site to help you find the way is:

http://travel.michigan.org/detail.asp?m=7&p=B5817

After lunch, we'll head out to Charlotte where Steve Ash has set up a tour of Johnson's Lumber. It's an old hang-out of mine from decades ago. It was the only place I could get wormy chestnut for the dulcimers I was building. It's a great place and it sounds like the owner is a "Creeker."

The folks that have expressed an interest are:

Tom Drake
Ken Cook
Chris Damm - Aren't grandkids great!!
Jim Young
Steve Ash
Steve Jr.
Bruce Spaulding
Brad Olson
Paul Downes - OOOOPS
Matt Meiser - off with his sweetie. Good move.
Keith July
William Lewis
Michael Cody
Larry Merlau - out tooting horns, or something
Mike Maikowski - Good health to you sir.
Michael Gibbons
John Bailey
Jeff Johnson
Bob Elzinga - Take care of the back.
Joe Chritz
Karl Laustrup - anybody got a homebuilt aeroplane to pick Karl up in Oshkosh?
Jim Hinze - Mr. Nurse
Mr. Nurse's daughter

We've got 18, so I've reserved the conference room. For the conference room we have to spend at least $150 on lunch and drinks. I don't see that as a problem. Hope I didn't leave anyone out.

If you could respond to this post if you are coming, it would help. Even though this is billed as "Michigan Creekers," don't be shy if you're from another state and want to join us, all are welcome.

John

we have to spend at least $150 on lunch and drinksIf Steve stays on his "salad only" diet we may have a problem, but if beer is involved we are good to go.

Oh ya, I'll be there.

John Bailey

Jim,

Good goin'. We'll just feed Steve two salads.

John

Steve Ash
01-25-2006, 6:20 PM
Couple of things... the guy that is a member here from Johnson's isn't the owner, but works there in customer sales....maybe he'll introduce himself on this thread.

Second, I'll still be on my salad diet but now I can have a bit of real food (and a beer occasionally). I've lost 27 lbs. and 5 inches off my tummy so I got to stick with it....summer is coming and I got to be fit and trim.

And I think Jim Young should buy me my first beer....just because.

John Bailey
01-25-2006, 6:36 PM
Steve,

Sorry about the mix-up with the member. I'll have to buy the second beer for that one.

I won't be able to make it. The following week is LOML's and my 5th anniversary and she wants to do something that weekend.

You'd be more than welcome, but I think the best we could do is at homebuilt landing a Oshkosh.

Karl, you and John could just carpool and drive across Lake Michigan, much shorter that way.....there might be ice by then:eek: .

And if you guys do make it, Jim Young would be more than happy to buy you guys a beer.

Is this open to all Michigan creekers? I think I have that day open and a run to Charlott/Johnson's when I can get close is always a joy...

All this talk about beer and salad....Does this mean that we will have to choose between the two? Beer?...Salad?...Beer?...Rabbit food?...Sorry the rabbit loses.

Will there be enough room in the truck if I want to bring some sticks home?Hey Jim
As long as you aren't planning on any of those 14'ers we should be OK. With the tail gate down it's 7.5' so most boards are fine.

I don't need a ton of stuff, just thought I'd pick up some interesting 8/4 boards of various stuff. I promise to keep it to a minimum ;)

I'll plan to be at the lunch. Depending on my schedule, I will try and go back (home) to the Johnson's tour.

For those who are not aware you can PM me with details on how to utilize the SEMIWW group discount.

This will give you price level 4 (best pricing) on wood and plywood (the level just below bunk)

Also are account give you 15% off of the "store boards", which IMHO is heck of a deal considering some of the nice figured stuff they have in stock.

Also anyone is free to store their lumber purchases in my shop. I'll also store machinery for free as well :)

John Bailey
01-26-2006, 8:52 PM
Bunk??

Michael Cody
01-26-2006, 9:14 PM
John, I have it on my calendar and will be there too... beer -- salad - I love both so it sounds like my kind of get together.. See ya'all on the 25th ...

Steve Ash
01-26-2006, 9:25 PM
Bunk??

John, I think I can explain this one. As a building contractor I call the local lumber yard to get a "bunk of osb" that means the lumber yard takes it off the supply truck and puts it directly on my truck, which I take to the jobsite. It is a big savings to us that use a lot of a certain product.

A bunk of osb may be 256 sheets. If I need 220 to build a house, I will order a bunk and take advantage of the savings...after all, I can use the remaining sheets on the next house. So the same reasoning at Johnsons, if they can sell an unopened "bunk" of material and not have to handle, store, etc. they can give you a good deal. So a level 4 is just below bunk pricing...since I am a frequent buyer at Johnsons, I still am only at a level 2, so being a member of SEMWW (South east michigan wood workers) I am able to get a BIG discount on materials. ( I use the level 4 even though my business is a level 2)...an offer that Brad has extended to anyone wishing to use that discount...which is a helluva an offer for you guys to take advantage of....way to go Brad!

I've got it on my calender. My wife will be spending her birthday at the spa, so as long as I get back to escort her to dinner I've got the whole day for myself. It sounds like I'll have to bring the truck!

John Bailey
01-27-2006, 4:25 PM
Chris,

Good to hear you're going to be there, although I'm a little concerned for your safety if you don't get back on time. We'll have to keep an eye on you and provide a designated driver if need be.;)

No need for a DD. I gave that stuff almost 20 years ago! I' m only about 2 hours away so it shouldn't be much of a problem (if I leave my credit cards at home).

Hey Jerry,

Your typing looks like you've already had a few margy's.

Why don't you come on up for the lunch. We won't mind a few Hoosiers joining us. For that matter, Buckeyes aren't too far away either. Nothing like a tri-state gathering.

John

Tom Drake
01-29-2006, 6:42 AM
John,
Can you add another one to the list? A woodworking friend of mine was over to my shop for the afternoon yesterday and said he would like to join us. He doesn't have a computer so he does not have access to the internet.

Karl Laustrup
01-29-2006, 7:13 AM
Sounds like the woodworking population of Michigan will be at lunch and then at the lumber yard for a least 4-5 hours.

Lets see, rent 26' Penske truck. Clear the 25th of any other doings. Borrow Steve's front loader to help with the heavy equipment. Go tool shopping in Michigan. Yep, sounds like the perfect day. ;) :D

Enjoy the lunch and lumber yard guys. :D

Tom,

Got plenty of room. His name goes in the green.(I've been changing the color of the confirmed attendees in the original post.) I do think LaSeniorita's is going to mind if we have a few extra, so if anyone decides to come the last minute, don't be shy.

Karl,

Hoosiers, Buckeyes, Cheesheads - wait, maybe we need a vote on the Cheeshead thing.:D

Would you mind adding my son Steve Jr. to that list?

Okay, I know there are other woodworkers here from Michigan, so I'm bumping this up. Remember this is open to any Creeker, so some of you guys from Northern Indiana, Ohio, etc. might also be interested in attending. John would be more than happy to add your name to the list. Also if there is anyone that wants to come to my place (shop) after Johnsons tour, I'll be happy to have visitors. Might even have a ice cold beverage to wet your whistle after all the sawdust at Johnsons waiting for you...

I'm just not sure about this airplane ride stuff Karl keeps talking about. Man, hasn't he heard about the energy prices rising and all that? Karl, you have any idea how much fuel a Lear burns through??? Sheeesh...Some people. Naw, for me, just send that stretched Hummer limo and all is good! I'll even share with Karl, Frank and Sudsy. :) So, when should we expect it??? I'm assuming dress will be casual??? Thanks guys! You're the greatest!:D

BTW, where did you ever find such a nasty avatar???:D

Oh, it's not going to be a Hummer??? Well then, one of those nice extended Escalades? A Caddy or Lincoln? Actually, any of them would be OK! :D No? How about a '76 Impala with FM stereo and an 8-track? What's that you say??? "Get on your 10-speed and peddle your fat xyz out here yourself!" Gee Steve, I thought you was nicer than that!!!:D

The avatar??? That was Andy's fault. Blame it on him! :) BTW, where did you come up with your present mug shot???:D

I hate to admit it, but I spent many a night cruising in my friends parents 76 Impala with a 8 track tape player.....and had a few hangovers the next day.

About mug shots....I spent a lot of time in the northern woods hunting deer, this was taken on one of my better days. J/K

well john i really think they should take up a collection to have you come over to steves afternoon party. i was just there last night for a miracle cure session and cant belive what the (messiah ash) can do for a decriped old man like myself, when i got there i couldnt walk when i left i was running. halluegha:D

They let you out of the woods looking like that. I thought they have northern wood police or something to prevent youpers from escaping. ;) :D

On another note, I have begun the process of building a means to fling several cheeseheads accross the lake so we may attend the party. Or at least do a little tool shopping.

I have two 50' poles ordered from "Poles r Us". These will be sunk in the ground about 15' somewhere on the western shore of the lake. I am still researching a place to purchase industrial strength rubber bands however. I figure there could be as many as 6-8 of us "flying" in.

Perhaps you can already envision this means of mass travel. I will need the approximate distance from the eastern shore of the lake to a location within, oh, say 50 yards of your place. Tensioning has to be precise or we may fall short or worse yet, end up in Lake Huron. Or Canada. :D

Of couse, I'm also working on the logistics of the return trip. That could prove a little more challenging as we'll be bucking the prevailing jet stream. Perhaps Pesh could hook us up with some fire extinguishers to use as rockets for the return trip.

Well, that's what I've got so far. How's it looking?

OK Guys,

We've got 14 folks that say they're coming. La Seniorita says they can handle 12-14 at a regular table. If we have more than that they would like us to reserve their conference room which sits 20. If we get that room, we have to, at least, spend $150 on drinks and lunch. I don't see that as a problem. Since I suspect some are built a little like me, the regular table is more likely to fit 12 than 14 (or if you're built a lot like me, maybe 8-10). So, if I don't get any drop-outs by Saturday, I'm going to reserve the conference room. See you in Lansing.

John

John Bailey
02-11-2006, 5:15 PM
Just thought I'd let everyone know I went ahead and reserved the conference room at La Seniorita. We've got 15 on the list and this way we'll have room if the cheesheads actually hit the target with their catapult. If there are others who want to attend, you are very welcome.

Bob, I'd suggest just showing up, taking a peek in the Conference Room, then deciding if you really want to be seen with these characters or not. :p I can't speak directly for them, since I'm way over here in LaLa land, but I can't imagine they'd run you off. :)

It certainly does. I called La Seniorita to make sure they had enough room. At first, they told me their conference room was set-up for 20. I was getting a little worried. But, no problem, they can set it up for as many as 50 if we need. So, we've lots of room.

Although I enjoy the bantering, joking etc, I won't be able to come to the official luncheon. I've got some family issues to tend to and you happen to be on the wrong (far) side of the lake. Besides, with that goup, there could be trouble...:) Thanks for thinking of me. Have an extra drink . Better alert the local police!!!:D

For those who are coming back to my shop afterward I will have some cold beverages that will include Bud light, Busch light, (provide your own DD :D ) Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Diet Coke.....hope that is acceptable.

Talked to Ron (at Johnson's workbench, and also a member here at SMC) yesterday, he said he wishes he could join us for lunch but will be waiting for us at the workbench to give us our tour.

Sounds like it is going to be a good turnout and hopefully some more woodworkers can attend that haven't posted or confirmed yet (hint, hint Chris).....let's hope the weather cooperates.

Sounds very good to me Steve. :)

I normally stock MGD, though I'm open to requests! :D A twelver usually lasts me about a month nowadays. I figure with you guys coming over, I may have to hook up the trailer to get enough home! Actually, when I know I have company coming, I try to hit up a couple of the local micro-brewery brands. We've got lots of them!!! :)

Yeah, Brett said he'd be happy to do an autograph for you, right after he does one for me!:D

****IMPORTANT****

If you plan to buy rough lumber in moderate to large quantities you will need to pre-order.

The warehouses are closed on the weekends (but there is a small amount of lumber available in the block warehouse). If you need 20-30 BDFT of something, then pre-order is optional, but anything larger should be pre-ordered.

Also there is no garuntee they will have what you need, or what they have in the block warehouse is not picked over, so pre-ordering is the best idea

Normally if you go to Johnson's on a weekday the warehouse is open and you can sort through their stacks to find what you want, but since this is a Saturday, it makes it a bit more difficult.

One thing to keep in mind is that Johnson's is very nice to use giving us this discount to our club, so i just ask that you are friendly to them and they you make it worth their time on a pre-order. I would call a $75 order a bare minimum order and I really encourage people to spend around $200 or 50 BDFT of lumber.

On the block warehouse, since it requires less employee time you can order as little or as much as you would like (just note the caveats above).

If you need ordering information, PM me for a link to ordering information. Also if you have questions let me know as well.

Thanks and looking forward to the 25th

Ride share - since my buddie Mr. Hinze bailed out on the trip, I am face with driving over there alone again. I was looking to see if any one else in my neck of the woods wants to share the trip. As a warning, I plan to stop by Steve's shop afterward, may even bring some equipment back with me (depending on if Steve is looking or not).

Jim, there is a chance that I can still attend. My wife is recovering well. Now, if I attended, I'd have to bring my daughter w/me ... she's excited about the sawmill tour, but I probably would skip Steve's afterwards. My daughter is 6 and into pen turning...

If anyone has any issues with me bringing her, let me know (I will not be offended). If there are no issues, then Jim I'll be heading out and will have my wife's mini-van and we can probably ride-share again.

A good size for blanks would be 3/4" x 3/4" x 5 1/4" long. Thanks a TON! She'll get a kick out of it (and keep her outta my stash of blanks LOL!)

John-

Sorry, I won't be able to make it this weekend. My back has been getting worse, and I'm afraid the drive to Lansing won't help it any.

If this is an annual event, count me in for next year. If not, let me know if any other events are coming up.

My apologies for not being able to join you. Have a good time.

I haven't really classified myself as a senior yet but I sure have memory problems. I got the date for the get together mixed up with a conferance On March 25th. I thought we were meeting on Feb. 18th. The food is real good at La Seniorita resturaunt. I sure wondered where everyone was. I thought someone had changed the date on me. Ther wasn't many cars in the parking lot when I got there......................:o

Paul,

I think way back on the original thread, the 18th was bandied about as a date for this luncheon. So it's understandable. However, I know the real reason is you were looking for excuses to go to La Seniorita. Been there, done that!!

One thing I wanted everyone who is attending to know is that Johnson's closes at 4:00 p.m. sharp. It would be a good idea to get there by 1:30-2:00 in order to take in the tour and do some shopping. Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Let's see, everyone will be heading to the restaurant by 10:30 - 11:00. ;) Lumber yard after that for an hour or so. Then on to Steve's place. HMMMMM!!!

So I get to Steve's first and get the tractor to load stuff. Then, on to the others....................................

Have to get my shopping list updated. Make sure the Penske is ready to p/u bright and early Saturday. ;) :D

Have a good time all. I hope somebody takes pictures. LOTS OF PICTURES!! :D

11:00 - 11:30 sounds like a good time. That should give us enough time to eat and talk a bit before heading to Johnson's. 1:30 - 2:00 arrive at Johnsons since they close at 4:00 sharp, then back to my dump...err, I mean shop till whenever.

And I'm also bringing along the digital camera to take pictures for anyone who wants to see what a good time we will have.

36 hours!!!!!!!!!, I was up all night with 4 kids now projectile barfing. I got a little shut-eye on the couch after 5:00 am. Got woke up at 7:30 by my daughter who needed a ride to her school car pool cause I haven't fixed her car yet. Sometimes I just hate the timing of things. I've been eye balling my work shop, thinking about installing a cot or something. Bet the wife wouldn't go for that though. The wife and I have been talking about putting the laundry room in the basement so we can add an extra washer and dryer. Right now with all the barfing going on, it is becoming a priority. One set doesn't seem to keep up with all the extra washing going on. So far I have managed to avoid getting doused, not so with the wife.:D She's taken several direct hits. It's good she's a RN, she's used to gross stuff.
