I really like the franklin USA made stud detector sold by harbor fright. But be careful. I thought the vent pipe was a nicely located stud in the bathroom.

Yikes!

Personally I like magnets, they find the screws, and you should be able to tell if it's a small round area, or a longer pipe.

I use the original version of that, not from HF, to help put crown molding up. You can hold the molding up to the ceiling with the finder, and know where to shoot the nail.

For magnets, I use little round rare earth magnets, and roll them around on a surface to find nails, and threaded inserts behind copper flashing.

I have the earlier version of that, works better than my Zircon that cost three times as much
