At the entry from the garage/ basement / outside, into the kitchen we put a couple of good sized rubber backed mats to collect dirt and water, and shoes. These mats get dragged outside and washed a few times a year. There is a problem however. The rubber mats discolor the kitchen vinyl. We recently replaced the vinyl and the mats. To prevent the problem we bought a few yards of felt and a can of spray glue. It takes a lot of glue and the mats have to be handled with care to prevent delamination but they work great.

A lot of rubber compounds will discolor paint, flooring and synthetic decking materials.

How about those carpet holder woven rubber mats. Also used as drawer liners and to hold wood to a bench top for sanding and routing. Do they stain?

We've used them on hardwood and linoleum for many years with no staining at all. I doubt very much that they'd stain vinyl flooring either.
