As promised, here are the pics of my newly acquired jointer. Purchased it locally from an Indy race car driver who is very much into woodworking. Haven't gotten his permission to mention his name though. Hopefully he'll come by to autograph it for me and have my picture taken with him as he signs it. He's a super nice fellow to boot. He purchased the jointer from Woodworkers Emporium, got it home, assembled it, ran a few boards through it, and then decided it was too small. Unfortunately for him, the store couldn't take it back for a full refund since it was already operated. The owner of the store had it stored in his attached wood shop. So basically it is a new $1600 jointer that I paid $1100 for, it included the Jet (I think) mobile base, and a dust collector duct.

Like I mentioned in a previous post (DJ-20 110V wiring change), it still had the protective coating on it. Just cleaned it up yesterday and snaped a few before and after pictures. Hopefully I'll do this picture posting correctly (it's my first time posting pics)

Here goes:

The before pics

Retail asking price (he likely payed less since he had multiple purchases)

After cleaning and polishing the tables

Sorry if the last pic isn't as clear as the others

As you may be able to tell, there are areas where paint is missing, and some staining on the fence is visable. Unfortunately there is some staining on the tables too, but of course--is doesn't affect the operation.

A question I posted may have gotten burried in the last post, so here it is again:

I noticed that the drive belt flutters while it is running (obviously). How much flutter should I expect? The machine was sitting idle for months so that may have something to do with it. That's just a WAG on my part though. Any input on this issue?

Thanks for looking.

Take care, Ed

My Grizzly jointer has a very smooth sound to it as it runs. Cuts are clean and true. Do you notice any effect on the cut? If not then I would say the amount of flutter you are experiencing is fine. However, you should be able to tighten the belts and you may consider replacing them too if you haven't already done so. It should be easy to do.

Hi Chris, the cuts seem to be very smooth to me. I only noticed the belt fluttering because the back panel was still off when I first started it up after the rewiring. There does seem to be a very light vibration while it is running, but then again, this is the first jointer I've owned so I have nothing to compare it to. Doesn't seem to have any more vibration than my CM 22124 TS, and the old HF bandsaw (1994 era) I bought used a month ago definetly has alot more vibration.

Tod, thanks for the info on the dead links. I'm still trying to figure out how to post pictures. Any help from members would be greatly appreciated.

Take care, Ed

The belt has probably taken on the shape of the pulleys after sitting in one position for so long. Hit the power switch at least once a day for a month or so, even when you aren't woodworking. Hopefully, the belt will stop in a different position each time. It should work itself out.

My Grizz shook like crazy when I first got it. I was also able to see some flutter in the belt. I was gonna call Grizz to get a new belt, but I was too busy. Then I thought I'd go to HF and pick up a link belt, but I couldn't get there after work before they closed. After using the jointer for a few months, I noticed that it started running nice and smooth. Had to be the belt breaking in. Nothing else could have changed.

That was my initial thought Michael. I'll do as you suggested and see if it will clear up after a few weeks. It's a nice running machine and have no regrets getting it.

Thanks for all the compliments and congratulations.

My links are dead also. Sometimes this happens when I'm using FireFox, which is the browser I prefer. Usually switching to Internet Explorer solves the problem, but is a pain. Hope this helps.

Well, I just got off the phone with him and he said that it was ok for me to mention his name. He is Canadian-born Patrick Carpentier, who drove for the Redbull Cheever team in 2005. If anyone is interested you can check out his official web site at this link http://www.carpentier.ca/ .

Really nice guy and very down-to-earth. Hopefully he will find time in his busy schedule to swing by to autograph the jointer.

BTW, he told me that he didn't have time to tune-up the jointer before taking it back to Woodworkers Emporium. I was pleasantly surprised that it ran and cut as well as it did without being fine tuned. I guess I will doing some fine tuning in the next few days.

Take care, Ed
