Here's a few recent bowls... first time with green Hickory and I really like it. It's a heavy wood, but it sure cuts and sands nice.

Hickory... 8-1/4" wide... 3-1/4" high... 3/8" thick...

Hickory... 7-7/8" wide... 4-1/2" high... 1/2" thick... (that's not tearout in the side - you'll just have to trust me ;) ... the wood just has a few color/grain changes. This tree was pushed over by a dozer several years back and was growing in an L-shape)

This is some of the same Cherry my others have come from... only a chunk or two left...

Black Cherry 7-7/8" wide... 2-3/4" high... 5/16" thick...

All three of these are sanded thru 600 and finished w/ Gel Poly. The NE Hickory was wiped down with thinned BLO/TO and cured for a few days first.

I'd appreciate critiques and comments - good, bad, and ugly. Even if it's just a "I don't like it"...:)

Mark,

Extremely nice looking specimans. The hickory really intrigues me as I have seen where most turners don't like hickory for whatever reasons. You have certainly shown that it should not be overlooked as a wood of choice.

Nice job and thanks for sharing.

3 nice ones Mark. I really like the NE Hickory. I made my desk a few years back with Hickory and swore off it. Might have to reconsider it for turning.;)

Mark, I agree with the others...nothing I can see needs adjustment. The two regular bowls are elegant in their simplicity and would be welcome on any table in my home. The natural edge piece is a classic form and looks just great! Bravo.

That hickory piece is very "creamy" in appearance. Nice!

The cherry bowl looks great Mark, but how did you turn those 2 red X's..

Now I can see the other 2 bowls Mark, they look great and I love that NE.

Mark, from the novice perspective they are outstanding. Like everybody else, I'm partial to that NE Hickory.

I've only turned one Hickory bowl but have access to unlimited Hickory turning stock. I'm gonna have to try and emulate your success with it.
