I am a member of Sawmill Creek and the other Woodxxx forum. Other forums also. I no longerparticipate in the "Off Topic" forum of the other Woodxxx forum. They are now completely dominated by QANON and vitriolic MAGA comments. This is a shame. I like participating in off topic discussions and also woodworking topics, but I cannot bring myself to continue with that website. I have tried to make rational, logical comments to that website's "Off topic" forum, but I have only been met with vitriol and insults. I have flagged horribly racist comments to the moderators to no avail.
Goodbye to that other wood workers forum. The list keeps getting smaller.

Which is a good time to say again, how much we appreciate the moderation on this forum that keeps what is mostly already a well-mannered collection of wood butchers on the straight and narrow. Thanks, Keith, Jim and other moderators whose names I don't quite know. You run a class act.

I have to agree with you David. Some things are better when politics and religion are left out.

My time doesn't allow me to visit much more than one woodworking group. Occasionally I will visit others, but not often.

When it comes to some of the fringe groups, another member here says it well in his tag line:

It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.
Mark Twain

Since that quote is one of my favorites the technicalities will be left for others to find on their own.

I appreciate a well moderated forum that keeps religion and politics out. Sawmill creek does a good job. However, there are other things that show up in other forums. You always have some that have something to say about everything and are THE EXPERT. You also have bullies and groups of bullies. This is probably just a reflection of society today.

I save my political and religious rants for the political religious forums. ;). It’s not surprising that sectarianism permeates what would seem to be the furthest thing from religious and political discussion boards, but that’s the age we live in. I also am very glad for what appears to be the island in the storm. Thanks again to the mod team for the manner in which they do their jobs.I don’t say much but I do enjoy this board.

Thank you to the moderators for keeping this forum clean of non-sense of all sorts. It's hard to learn anything when people are screaming and yelling all the time. Anger is deadly.

It's a shame, but the traffic at 'that other forum' is almost completely dominated by OT stuff - probably 5 to 1.

Used to be they had a separate link to view only the woodworking topics (over 'there'), quite a while back. Similar to how some here have specially bookmarked URLs to avoid topics they don't don't particularly have an interest in, whether it's hand tools or wood turning or CNC.

I hate it when a political forum like this goes off on woodworking tangents. Wouldn't that be a "splintered thread"? "Bark"ing up the wrong tree or something.

But on more serious things why not pay the minimalist $6 dollars and have full privileges David? Basically the price of 1 cup at a well known over priced Washington based coffee chain.

The moderators here do a great job. Jim, Keith, John and the rest - thank you for the time and effort you put in. I appreciate it.

There is also a nice group of thoughtful, intelligent and generally friendly and helpful contributors who post regularly. You all make Sawmill Creek a worthwhile place to read and participate in. So, from the bottom of my heart, thanks to all of you!

A very small wood working forum I used to enjoy was one of the first to attract people from all over the world. A Man from the Middle East posted a very beautiful piece of work, that also contained a Muslim prayer in Arabic. The nasty comments and lack of toleration were unbelievable. People couldn't just remain silent. Last I visited the site, it was almost entirely posts by devout bigots.

That was on a now defunct computer and I doubt I could find the forum again. Glad to be here.

I also would like to express my appreciation for the moderators! I came to the conclusion a long time ago that discussion on the internet is not possible without it anymore, or if it ever was. There just aren't any of the mechanisms that moderate face-to-face interactions (flawed as they may be). The internet allows the loudest and most destructive voices to be amplified without any context. At least for me, life is too short and time too precious to waste on that.

I think it is funny when I have ask a poster where he lives when it may effect the answer. If no response in a few days I up it and ask for continent as a minimum. Often they reply USA and are irate I would think they could possibly be anywhere else.

I have accounts on few other forums as well but have not visited them in years.

One more thing that is good about SMC is the clean interface. There are minor quirks but reading pages on phone is effortless. No ads jumping on my screen everywhere.

Woodworking forums like this one are a throwback to an older internet. People have moved on to looser and more transitory venues. Photos of accomplishments seem to be a more common way to communicate. Help with figuring out stuff comes from searching you tube videos. Pre-internet, experts with reputations were sought out for passing on knowledge. Tage Frid, Fine Wooodworking, classes from people good at teaching, word of mouth. It was important to establish relationships with people with more experience. Forums were great, everyone had a microphone.

I have learned so much over the years reading forums. No more going to see some old guy that knew a lot. For example, I was able to build a 20 hp phase converter, insulate my building, move and hoist equipment, buy lumber, buy machinery and tooling, and do all kinds of dust collection with knowledge learned in forums.

However, the other side of the coin is the previously mentioned forum. It used to be somewhat interesting as a woodworking knowledge source. However, there was this basement where people would park their manners at the door, and let fly with the most vile racist lies and attacks. It became a safe zone for smug sharing of grievance. I felt their pain, so many men with their panties in a twist, I don't know how they could sit at a computer and type.

It was fun for a while to check in and join one side or the other in political arguments. However, after a while the ones who shouted longest and loudest were the only ones left., a mirror of public discourse.

I hope that Sawmill Creek can continue to be a place where people can respect each other as people by not allowing lies and hatred.

The Australian forum does not require names and is at least as good as SMC with no obnoxious posting. I have no idea of the forum being spoken of in this thread and it seems to be a place to avoid.

Couldn’t agree more with the thoughts expressed about this and that “other” forum. I visit this one every day and participate on a regular basis. I look at the other one about once a week (if that) to see if the 2 or 3 members whose knowledge I respect have posted anything.

Gave up on them recently as they seem to have lost control of their login system and mechanism for password resets. I keep requesting the link to reset and never get a reply. Either they all died or it is a ghost site.

Stan Calow
09-06-2022, 3:02 PM
Yes. Thank you SMC community. I've been in a few non-woodworking forums, where the slow death began with increasingly hateful political arguments. That drove away new members and things degenerated because the mods didn't want to drive off the regulars.

Al Weber

Me too. I was a long term watcher but recently my password no longer worked. I can get no response to a password reset request and each time I try to establish a new account it tells me my email is already being used by someone else. I don't normally participate in off topic discussions due to the inflammatory nature of most but really liked the woodworking sections. Oh well, change is good.

So did I and other than obvious porn sites (and "woodporn" that clearly means exceptional lumber like this 'https://talaricohardwoods.com/wood-porn/ I don't know what site(s) the op is referring to. Not that I want to frequent a woodworking site with contentious political arguments, and I do appreciate this site's character, but I am curious what I am missing. Anyone care to elucidate?

I'm in agreement with everyone here, it's up to the moderators.
I've been a moderator at woodturners resource ('http://www.woodturnersresource.com)
for many years, and it's not difficult to keep those types of posts and posters off the forum.
If it's been allowed to get so far out of control that members are leaving, it means the moderators are AWOL or in agreement.

There will always be strong opinions and disagreements on forums, no matter the subject.
IMO, There is certainly no need to allow politics and religion into crafts or trades type of forums, there are appropriate places for those who want to discuss those topics.

Some would like to think that SMC is the only WW forum on the internet, unfortunately reality says it is one of many but this topic has been aired before on quite a few occasions. The conditions of entry to SMC is that there will never be links to any WW forum and if accept that by being a member. This forum is a bottom line business and the management have every right to impose any conditions they want.

I had saw references to such legal stuff too. I'm just trying to figure out what in the world that would be here that would lead to a court room. If I disagree with someone....it's just that. I disagree and go on. I respect your view and your right to it. That seems to be a quickly dying approach these days.

I forget if the lawsuits were over berating a product or publicly criticizing customer service. My memory isn't quite what it once was.
