Some ideas and experiences about hooking up a trailer were discussed in another thread: https://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?299219-Trailer-hook-up
The solutions were interesting but for my situation I decided adding a camera would be best.
I bought an inexpensive backup camera on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071D5CN9D) and bent a length of metal strap to make a bracket with magnets to stick to the surface of the tailgate. Hooks up in a heartbeat. Wow, what an improvement!

Easily adjusted further by bending the bracket.
