It's pretty easy. See the little plastic loop in the first photo. You place the jaws of the pliers against the side facing the camera and the side that was away from the camera and squeeze. You squeeze the black plastic piece with a pair of pliers and push it up through the hole.

Here is how they come apart.

There are actually special pliers used for installing and removing those. Not worth hunting down a pair for just one time use. If you were in my area you could come by and use mine.

What Lee posted should work.

I have alllways just used a flat blade screwdriver to pop the key out. Then fingers or pliers to hold the barbs on the main body in while prying it out. Do not squeeze so hard it can not slip out of the pliers.

Channel-lock pliers or parallel jaw pliers are what I use. Compress the halves, squeezing the cable and extract.

Squeezing didn't work, but while I was squeezing I happened to twist it. Turning it 90 degrees makes it come right off. The hole it fits in has two flattened sides that correspond to flattened sides on the cord clamp. All's well that ends well.
