Looks like the tang was cut off to use in an electric drill or drill press.

It may be possible to make one from an old auger bit if you have the correct die to cut the threads.

I checked the shaft....looks factory done...and quite well done....
484817
and..
484818

She also had an older wall mounted drill press that she wanted to sell....

As for that block plane..
484819
Appears to be made by Millers Falls for sale at Sears....
484820

Wasn't too bad of a day....

Block plane is a 16c by Millers Falls, sold by Sears.

Square appears to be a Stanley....The brass wear strip on the handle is held in place with 3 slotted screws.

484899
Irwin 3" No. 8000, No.1 Phillips seems to be in decent shape...

Outside calipers does not have any logos....might be by General?

Not sure who came up with the tenon augers design, first.....EC Stearns & Co. or AA Woods? Not exact copies of each....but close.

I do have a brace and a Breast drill more than capable of holding that round shank.....which appears to be factory.

The holder for that drill/driver insert is part of a set by Montana Brand. Now I can switch from the #2 phillips, to the #1 phillips with just a click. Instead of needing an allen wrench...

You can rule out E.C. Stearns. His father George N. Stearns had received hollow auger related patents before Edward took over the business.

Patent number 225,496 was issued to Edward C. Stearns, who had become the head of a company founded by his father in 1864. George N. Stearns & Co. became E. C. Stearns & Co. in 1877. The company was still doing business in 1891. Father and son were obviously interested in improving hollow augers. George N. Stearns was issued 8 patents for hollow augers between 1863 and 1880, several of which were manufactured by the Stearns company.

E.C. Stearns must have done business beyond 1891. My E.C. Stearns hollow auger has a 1900 patent date on the blade depth adjuster.

This is also from the page linked above:

The third adjustable hollow auger in the Tison Tool Barn appears to be a rare find. The only marking on the tool is "PATḎ DEC ~ 1868." US patent 85,423 was issued to J. H. Beauregard of Sandy Hill, N. Y. on Dec. 29, 1868.

There were likely others fixed or adjustable hollow augers before that date. If they were patented one might be able to dig for hours to see who was first to the patent office.

Many patents often have a sentence in the first paragraph about being an improvement of an existing item.

The first hollow augers may have been a common item for a blacksmith to make for chair makers, coach makers, wagon makers and other trades.

One site even had a picture of this from Millers Falls:

My spoke pointer is on what appears to be a Millers Falls marketed brace:

484901

Albeit is held in place by a modification of drilling and adding a screw.

Just can't stop digging.

Found an early G.N. Stearns patent > https://pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?PageNum=0&idkey=NONE&SectionNum=3&HomeUrl=&docid=0039841

Even this one comments on "being an improvement":

484902

This is from 1863. E.C. Stearns was six or seven years old at the time.

A Brace to use with it..
484903
Has no trouble holding that 1/2" shaft...
484904
Next question....who used pewter rings?
484905

Guess I need to be on the lookout for a hollow auger, too..

Come up to West Liberty, OH. over the Labor Day weekend.....almost a mile of walking through all the vendors out at Lions Park. IF you stay for the Country Music Concert, there is a cover charge....otherwise, parking and admission to the Tractor Fest is FREE.

I'll have to take my camera along, again....
484950
484951
484952
These were from 2019....And, last year...I had an issue with a knee, that kept me away....excited about going back, this year....

Hmmm, steel bolts..Warranted Superior medallion....etch claims it is a Keystone? Maybe a K-3?

Cleaned up, handle refinished..saw plate is kink free, now...
485024
Keystone...
485025
Awaiting a vise...
485026
As the well set teeth could use a touch-up with a file....

Edit to add: My Late FIL used to run a Hardware Store with his father, down in DeGraff, OH. Kinnan's Hardware. Apparently, the fellow just down the street, that owned Hoke's Variety Store....bought this saw new at that Hardware Store. The Lady I bought this saw from for $2 was Mr. Hoke's Daughter. She was keeping another saw for around the house use...that had a Rockwell medallion. As in the Rockwell factory up in Kenton, OH.

Small world....

OK..more research....saw is a K-2 Speedster.
485212
The saw standing up beside it is the K-3 Pacemaker (full, readable etch, BTW)

Both saws are 26" Skew back, cross cut, 8ppi.

Managed to refresh the K-2's teeth, enough to take the saw for a test drive..
485213
Had to slow down a bit, and watch out for that vise handle....
485214
Burn marks from using a handsaw? Hmmm...just some scrap 3/4" plywood..
485215
Saw cuts fairly fast, and true....did not drift any...
485216
The K-3, though...cut very rough, even for an 8ppi saw...lots of splinters out the back.

K-3 can go back and hide out in the saw til.....may keep the K-2 around as a user saw.

The saw sold for $1.50 when new....and I paid $2 to the Daughter of the man who bought it new from my late FIL.....
