Hi,

I just purchased a used King KC-16-1-D drum sander without doing all my homework. King specifies the use of 3 1/4" sandpaper rolls and I can't find any suppliers that offer that width.

1) any leads on 3 1/4" wide abrasive rolls?
2) would it be foolish to use 3" wide rolls, leaving a 1/4" space between wraps so that the ends fit properly in the clips?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if this will help, but try calling Klingspor. They make their own brand. It's not outsourced as far as I know. They may be able to help you out. Other than that, could you buy a roll of 3" or whatever you can find and just cut your own length and modify the tapers to fit your machine.

Klingspor or Industrial Abrasives (or the like) would surely be able to provide the paper. I would be temped to test a 3" strip just in case. You could use a 3" strip of paper towels, waxed paper or floor guard to test. If the end of the strips align with the clamps you could just order a more standard paper. If not, someone will get a repeating 'custom' customer ;-)

P.s. I was curious and so searched -- abrasive roll, 3-1/4" --. 3M has 3-1/4" rolls but they are PSA. Does the machine use PSA abrasives?

Doesn’t that just change the angle of the wrap?
A little bit of geometry (with knowing the drum circumference and paper width) should get you the wrap angle.
The only issue I can think is how wide it is at the far clamp

Thanks Steve, I'll contact Klingspor; they don't list 3 1/4" on their https://www.klingspor.ca/ website.

Thanks Glen, I'll look into Industrial Abrasives too. My sander does not use PSA backed abrasives; might be an option to bypass one of the clips.

Thanks John. The length of the diagonal cut for the taper does not change based on the paper width; it is always the circumference of the drum. What matters is the relative alignment of the clamps; will the clamps be located on the drum to catch the tips of both tapers. After wrapping a 3" roll on the drum and cutting the second taper, the tip of the taper doesn't reach the clamp. The slots for the clamps are only about 1" long, so there isn't much room to cheat. I'll do some tests with other widths and see if I get lucky.

Hi Steve,
I have the same sander as you, and use 3-1/8" sandpaper from Klingspors;
https://www.woodworkingshop.com/abrasives/rolls/?hawkview=grid&roll_width_and_length=3-1%2F8%22%20X%2018
When I roll it on the drum, it leaves a slight gap between the wraps but works fine. You could likely use 3" as well - it might leave a slightly wider gap.

Thanks much Ed - I will give that a try. An 18m roll should yield 7 wraps - good value there.

I did find some King Canada branded wraps at Hansler Smith (https://www.hansler.com/products/abrasive-roll-king-canada-3-1-4-x-96-80-grit-abrasive-roll-sb-396-80) and ordered some last week; Purolater claims they'll arrive next week.

I found another online supplier - don't know the manufacturer.
