Well, I still had all of this stash of resaws..
483894
Maybe glue them up into panels?
483895
so..
483896
And..
483897
Not too sure about that knot..
483898
And..most came out at..
483899
About 8" wide....none of the 4 panels matched each other for length...we can fix that, once the clamps come back off...

Have a 1 x 6 upstairs, with a bit of Live Edge....may save that for a lid's front edge. rest of the board will get ripped and cut into Stiles & Rails, to house the glued up panels

Stay tuned...:D

Out of the Foret de Pinces....cross cut to make either long sides, or shorter end panels...
483900
Somehow..8" width looked a bit too wide....was making the panels look a bit too "Square" ripped all 4 down to 5" width...and kept the 3" wide cutoffs for another use..(tray, maybe)

Most of the panels needed to be planed flat, anyway...
483901
Trying to make the glue joints disappear...
483902
Some were a bit tricky to plane...with just a Stanley No. 3, Type 11....
483903
Almost flat...

Have to haul a 1 x 6 plank to the shop, after Lunch....there is a section with a live edge, that might work out for the lid....the rest of that plank will get cut up into Stiles & Rails...to house 4 panels....may leave the panels flat? Maybe a rebate around on the inside face?

Stay tuned....:D

A 1 x 6 x 65-1/2" plank was hauled to the shop...middle section had a live edge..
483935
So, I cut that section out..and set aside...what was left, was ripped down into 1-1/2" wide strips...
483938
Some of which came from this area..
483941
Still had some rough edges...and since I wanted all to be the same width.were run through again at 1-3/8" width...

Then some crossing cutting..
483946
8 parts for the long sides, and..
483947
8 parts for the shorter ends..

Thinking that 7/8" was a bit too thick...decided to thin things down to 5/8" thick..
483948
Was able to run all 16 parts through in a single pass for each part...fingers being kept safe by.
483949
This push stick for narrow boards...

Big question now..?
483950
Too much width of groove? Maybe add a rebate to the inside edges of the panels?

Had to make a new zero clearance overlay....as the old one was broken....will post as a different subject...

Stay tuned...

The Dungeon Woodshop is a Hybrid Wood shop....I use whatever tool that will do the task I need done. So...
484005
..The Sunday Funnies began here, by adding a rebate around all four panels....then..
484006
Rebates need a groove to call home...Can't quite use the Stanley 45 for these...not enough room for the 45's fence..16 grooves to do, takes a while...then..
484007
Needed Tenons milled....8 parts (rails) x 2 = 16 tenons..
484008
Rebate needed adjusted to match the grooves....had to also trim the panels back a bit...to match the rails...

Some parts were a bit fancy...
484009
More so than others...legs and toes were just starting to cramp up..time to stop..
484010
That will be enough of the Sunday Funnies, I think....

Still to do? Mortises for those soon-to-be Haunched Tenons, Tongue & Groove for the corner joints, after that? Maybe a glue up?

Stay tuned..:D

Paying the price this morning...Sir Uncle Charles has taken up residence in both feet, and trying to spread up the right shin.....was a very RUDE wake-up call, this morning.....

Monday? Monday?? I think the shop will be closed, today.....not getting off to a very good start.

Need to reset the Mortise Jig...stiles are a bit narrower that the last batch. Need to decide on the feet detail on the box.....and the T & G corner joints need to be done...and haunch the tenons....

Would be a full day in the shop...just not on a Monday...

Stay tuned.....

steven c newman
08-08-2022, 7:16 PM
Decided to reset the Mortise Jig...and have it ready to go...It WAS set up for 3/4" thick stock....moved one jaw a bit..
484063
So it now holds the 5/8" thick parts..
484064
A nice snug fit...but, I can still add a clamp..
484065
So things won't move...right now, the part is slid out a bit, to allow for laying out a mortise, tomorrow..
484066
have also laid out the chisel and mallet...so they are ready to go...
484067
Mortise is to be laid in off of this tenon...note the Haunch...

And that was it, for a Monday....quit while I was ahead...;)

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
08-09-2022, 1:14 PM
Haunches done..
484125
Corners have been milled
484126
Was a busy morning...."Busy, busy...busy.."

steven c newman
08-09-2022, 6:33 PM
8 mortises are now done...dry fitted, panels adjusted...gaps closed..
484149
Used these things a lot, today..
484150

Was trying to close up a couple gaps..
484151
Usually from the haunch not allowing things to fully seat.

No glue yet...debating on whether to try a third time in the shop...

Panels had to be trimmed a bit....needed the stiles from the front and back to keep the clamps in place....can't chop any more mortises, until after the ends are glued up...

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-09-2022, 7:22 PM
have returned from the shop....glue, glue brush, cauls, and clamps...a LOT of clamps......and a mallet as needful....and a bit of cussing for good measure..
484158
and..
484159
Let both assemblies sit over night.....pictures tomorrow, once the clamps have come off...

Stay tuned...:D

steven c newman
08-10-2022, 10:19 AM
And.....un-clamped...
484161

Work on the front and back later...

steven c newman
08-10-2022, 6:00 PM
Test fitted the panels for the front/back frames..
484173
Something wasn't working out just right...
484174
Besides being too long, and too wide....panels were out of square...

Got the ends squared up...needed to adjust the rebates all around, to account for the new length and width...tablesaw for that.....one panel caught the spinning blade before I was ready..kick back! Side of the right hand kept the panel from flying away...gonna be a bruise. Also, take a look at these corners...
484175
Never know these are SHARP....to fine tune the widths of the panels...I was using a handplane...only needed 3, maybe 4 strokes....between #2 and #3 stroke, I came back a bit too far...
484176
Yep, one of THEM days.....

One last check to see how the panels fit...then start on a few mortises...
484177
1st of 4, for today...Another Dry Fit?
484178
Those haunch tenons? They were mis-cut, but, since they are to be facing down under the box....meh..set this over with the 2 ends..
484179
2 glue-ups, one dry (no glue) fit....no clamps needed...
484180
Last assembly can wait a day....chisels are by Witherby....Mallet was having a hard time, today....it was getting confused about whether to hit the wooden parts, or my hand holding a chisel...

Bench was getting pretty messy..
Decided to quit for the day...was getting a bit sore, anyway.

haven't decided whether to try to glue up today's work..or wait and do both of the sides...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-11-2022, 11:02 AM
Late last night...slipped back to the shop....and...
484200
This will be either the front, or the back of the box...haven't decided..yet...

Today's Tasks?
484201
Use these tools....
484202
To lay out and chop the last 4 mortises...and then see about a glue up....

Maybe after that, try to make this thing..
484203
Into a live edge lid.....Not sure if it will be 7/8" thick, or try to thin it down to 5/8" thick....might be a bit tricky to resaw?

steven c newman
08-11-2022, 8:30 PM
Last 4 mortises were done this morning

With a dry fit completed..
484218
And then a glue up..
484219
With double cauls to keep things flat....

had one issue, today...tried the panel for size..
484220
Was a tad too wide....we have ways..
484221
Then try again...
484222
Means I was waiting most of the day for glue to dry...
484223
Before I could glue all 4 sides together....

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-11-2022, 11:37 PM
Will see how it turns out..
484232
Once the 19 clamps come back off...
484233
In the morning....

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-12-2022, 11:06 AM
Inventory of the clamps...as I have removed them this morning..
Two 18" F style clamps..
Eight 12" F style clamps
Eight C clamps
484265
Total of 18 clamps...and 8 cauls
484264
Have checked the box for square, once the clamps were put away.....seems to be square. Need to clean up the dried glue squeeze outs...level a few spots.
484258
Bottom panel will rest on "slips"....that I need to rip to size, miter the ends, and glue in place.....then a 1/4" plywood panel will get glued to the slips.
484259
484260
484261
Then a bit of glue...
484262
Will get the end slips tomorrow
maybe later, I can work on a lid of some sort?
484263
Now that the parts are all 5/8" thick...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-13-2022, 12:36 PM
Busy Saturday morning...Slips #3 and #4 have been trimmed and glued in place..
484308
A 1/4" thick sheet of plywood was placed under the box..
484309
A pencil traced around on the inside of the box..
484310
Lines were cut..
484311
Test fitted..with a plane...
484312
To get rid of the wavy edges..can't install it , yet.....it will rest on a bed of glue on the slips....have to wait until the clamps are off...

Next? Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-13-2022, 12:45 PM
Note to the above...Slips #1 and #2 were leveled down to the bottom edges of the box..
484313
With a plane, of course.

Stanley No. 358 was rather busy, this morning....along with mitering the slips, it also was doing some cross cuts..
484314
3 of the lid's parts...will work on a type of Miter joint next time in the shop....
484315
I also cut a few parts for a panel, for the lid....and even glued the panel up..
484316
Waiting on glue to dry, again....

I brought the trash can back downstairs to the shop.....after burning it's contents the other night in the fire pit.....however, I need to bring the "Super-scooper" back to the shop...
484317
Need a "Clean up! Aisle #2 !! before too much else can get done...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-14-2022, 10:56 AM
Need to flatten 3 parts..
484376
So that they are all the same, even thickness....resaw left a ridge..

Then work on a miter joint a bit...
484377
Along with a groove to house the panel....simple, right?
484378
Needs a little more work, today...

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-14-2022, 4:23 PM
Well, all them clamps holding the slips in place came off, today...bead of glue applied to the slips, plywood panel was set down into the glue (after the glue had been mooshed along with a brush) question was..how to clamp the plywood down in to the glue, until the glue dried.....we have ways..
484393
How about 3 smoothers...Let this sit a day...

That glued up panel also came out of the clamps, today...
484394
Needing cleaned up, and squared up...then rebates were laid out on 3 edges...tablesaw work..
484395
Took 2 set ups...but..
484396
Dry fit..
484397
Then a glue up..
484398
Tomorrow, I can trim the back edge straight, once I mark out where the cut line will be...

waiting on glue to dry, again..

steven c newman
08-15-2022, 9:26 PM
Clamps removed...planes out of the box...turn the box over onto the lid..
484487
Mark the back edge as to where the bandsaw will be cutting...then the plane takes over...
484488
Will see about hinges, tomorrow...
484490

Knuckle found a sharp corner, somewhere.....Laundry Detail can being dangerous?

steven c newman
08-17-2022, 7:55 AM
How to hold a lid to a box, when the box is too large for the bench vise...

Since the back of the lid and the back of the box need to be flush with each other...
484567
And the lid gets centered....2 clamps to keep things still...while I move this over to the bench...
484568
Clamp the front lip of the lid in the vise. Lay out for the hinges..
484569
Cordless drill to drill the pilot holes..
484570
And install the hinges..
484571
Repeat for the latch...
484572
Next up?
484573
Use these to build a lift out tray....

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-18-2022, 8:53 AM
While waiting on me to build that tray...decided to give the outside of the box a coat of Witch's Brew..
Top..
484599
Front..
484600
Back...
484601

Have not done the inside of the box, yet...just the underside of the lid...
484602
And let things air out a bit....

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-19-2022, 7:09 PM
Lets see...parts planed flat, edges jointed..
484679
Tools to do a bit of layout, and the first lay out done..
484680
Saw a few lines?
484681
Chop out the waste...
484682
Use these "Pins" to trace out the waste on the "Tail" board....saw the waste, chop the waste...
484683
First dry fit ( no glue) then, repeat for the next corner..including a dry fit...
484684
This was last night....might try to get the other 2 corners done in a little bit....then figure out how to add the lift-out handle..
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-21-2022, 9:34 AM
Was getting a bit low in the Hardware Bin...decided to restock the other day....a Road Trip to Lima, OH....to the Hobby Lobby store
484784484785484786
Total cost for me to get back out of there? $17.73, counting Sales Tax.

Then decided to saw some..
484787
A bit of chisel work..
484788
Dry fit corner #3 and #4..
484789
Lay out a dado..
484790
Saw and chisel work...
484791
Dry fit, including a panel for the bottom of the tray...

Need to do a little more saw work...handle need a shape....and a place for fingers to grip..

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-21-2022, 9:36 AM
Dry fits?
484792
And a roughly cut to size plywood bottom...
484793
Used a sharp chisel to excavate the dado...
484794

After all that work?
484795
Time for a nap.....

steven c newman
08-21-2022, 5:17 PM
Drilled a starter hole...
484821
then got out the saw...
484822
I am in no way an artist with a scroll saw...but..
484823
I could "refine" things with a spokeshave, later?

Right now...
484824
We be waiting on glue to dry....diagonal clamp to pull things into square...

Once the clamps can come off, I can glue the bottom onto the tray....and figure out what to sit the tray on inside the box.

Stay tuned...

This one has been the most fun project in a long time. I always want ask if there will be a set of measured drawings for sale on your website. It’s Monday. I hope you have a nice day off. Cheers.

steven c newman
08-22-2022, 7:48 PM
Have never had a measured set of drawings for my projects....although I have used a couple from Paul Sellers.

Single Brain Cell Sketch Up does not have a "Print" option...

steven c newman
08-23-2022, 3:16 PM
Had to remove the clamps, today...
484906
The infamous Foret de Pinces....then the edges were planed flush..
484907
Millers Falls No. 8 seemed to work just fine....then the Dremel to help sand the handle a bit..
484908
Then, need something for the tray to stand on..
484909
3/8" dowels, cut to 3" length...bead of glue to attach into each corner...test for depth...
484910
I think that will do? Debating about handles for the ends of the box..
484911
Waiting on the glue to dry..again....insides might get a coat of Witch's Brew?

Maybe a clear coat of gloss poly tomorrow?

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-24-2022, 7:06 PM
Handles are installed
484936
Insides have a coat of stain..
484937
As does the tray...
484938
A chain has been added..
484939
Waiting on a coat of clear gloss poly to dry on all the outside areas...

will see about a 2nd coat, tomorrow...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-26-2022, 4:25 PM
Clear gloss poly has been rubbed down....so...
485027
Have a looksee..
485028
Open the lid...
485029
Lift the tray out...
485030
Figured I did not need "London Pattern" dovetails for a simple tray...
485031
Was trying to get the grain the line up going around the corners....
485032
To where the grain on this end...
485033
Lined up with the grain in back...

Need to label this box as "Box Building Tools & Supplies"....Otherwise, calling this Project done....

steven c newman
08-30-2022, 9:11 AM
Posted down in the Projects section.

Next Lumber delivery is sometime after the 3rd Wednesday of September. Right now, the shop has a single plank on hand....7/8" x 6" x 59".....rather plain looking Maple.

Unless I can cobble up a Project from that single board? May resaw it down, and try another Paul Sellers' Desktop Organizer?

Thanks for looking in.
