Hoping someone can tell me about this brace. I found it in the free box at my shop. I have a yankee and full set of augers which get used fairly often, but this is a different little beast. Not sure what type of bit to look for. Maybe some sort of small spoon bit? Thanks for lookin

Just about any square shanked bit will do, as long as it fits.....then tighten the thumbscrew to keep the bit from falling out....

Hmm perhaps. My experiments thus far have not really been so straightforward. A round or hex shank bit skews pretty badly once tightened. Square tapered bits for a classic brace are much too large…
Thanks! Ill look out for some square shanked bits. The opening is 5/16ths.

Looks kind of like this one:

From here > http://oldtoolheaven.com/millers-falls/brace/brace2.htm

My spoke pointer came attached to a similar one:

Mine appears to be modified with a through fastener.

It may be a #102 or 103:

Found on the same page as the #82/83

I actually just bought a pair of these. I have a spoke pointer that doesn't chuck into a more "modern" brace, so I use this style brace for that. They work well

Thanks Jim, I believe you nailed it. That thumb screw seems unmistakable. With an 8” sweep and what I believe a screw that would contact on flat side vs corner, it must be a #103.

Will likely post for the BST soon as I’m perfectly happy with my current set up and none of my bits fit.

Thanks again all

Chuck, you may want to hang on to it incase you ever pick up some old center bits or other early bits that will fit this but not in the more modern chucks.

Not sure what the BST is, Blood Sweat & Tears?

Heck, at 23˘ a piece I'd buy a dozen. :D
