check your miter saw plastic insert to see if it is interfering with laying your material flat across the table. this mostly affects cutting pieces that don't span across the entire insert. the plastic pre-cut seam edge was raising my material enough to effect a square cut. had to shave off the raised edges with a chisel

Good advise. And on many saws, you can also use the original insert as a template to make new zero-clearance inserts out of a variety of materials if you choose for cleaner cutting on the bottoms of material being worked.

Most OEM inserts are a joke and not a funny one

This is obviously for 90 degree cuts only, the plastic strips can be used for bevel cuts but still lack a lot. It's not too difficult to make wooden inserts for common bevel angles
