Not sure if this is the right section to post this question.

Thinking of making a Beer stein on the Wood Lathe, and using a stainless steel liner of some sort for the interior. The question I have, is instead of trying to do some fancy hand engraving on the exterior of the wood, Can the fancy carving/ engraving be done using some sort of CNC router/ or engraver ?

Thanks,

Clarence

It's a simple project for anyone with a rotary axis on their CNC or laser.

A C02 laser with a rotary could do this, but a few issues to keep in mind:

- keeping the work in focus. If the wood is straight-sided and reasonably the same diameter all the way around it should work pretty good.

- a 'hot dog' rotary likely won't work well because, depending on laser power, you may need to make several passes, and for repeatability you need a chuck-style rotary. (Assuming the stein will have a handle when engraved, a chuck rotary is pretty much required!)

- the very top and bottom Y coordinates of a cylinder when 'rolled out flat' as it will be on your monitor, are exactly the same- example, a 1" diameter cylinder has a working height of 3.1416", but once the cylinder rotates that distance the end meets the beginning. Depending on the design you're engraving, and how accurate the rotary is, the end and beginning points may not exactly match. Some testing and tweaking of diameter values may be needed to make a continuous design seamless. But it's do-able!
