There are 3 planks IN the shop at the moment....2 laying on my bench..
482255
Spalty and barky looking 1 x 6s...and the far ends?
482256
rather plain looking? The 3rd plank? Only 4' long, but...
482257
Hmmm, wondering IF a lid of some sort lies inside of this one....
482258
Underneath....trying to decide whether to hide this feature, or show it off?

There is still 10 linear feet of rather plain looking 1 x 6 Maple still upstairs, BTW

Still waiting on a cut list from The Single Brain Cell Sketch Up.....maybe a couple fancy-schmanzy boxes? Maybe keep the barky edges?

We'll see...Not sure about doing any resaw with this stuff...

Stay tuned..:D

Ok..decided not to keep all that barkiness....BUT try to keep as much Spalt as I could...while on Laundry Detail, this evening...
482296
Hmm, cut the worse off of each end..
482298
Which left this...
482297
Trying to get the most non-bark section out...set this aside, for now..

The other 2 planks had a lot of spalt...at one end...cross cut to get as much as I can...
482305
And, found a cut-off from the last Project....These all need the edges cleaned up....and parallel...along with the rather plain looking pieces..
482308

Thinking about how to use these 8 parts...
482309
Maybe all that spalt for the top and lid of a Lap Desk? Plainer stuff for the sides and back....and have to see about a piece across the front?

Widest board I have to work with....5-1/4"....along with a 5-3/16" and a 5" ....rest are just under 3".....

Have to research what size these desks were...and start with a glue-up of the lid....then see about all 4 sides....and see what hinges I need to use....

Stay tuned...

Last night's Laundry Detail.....decided to thin all the parts down to 5/8" thickness.....and..I am not about to hand plane a 1/4" off....so..
482316
Blade is as high as it can go...fence is 5/8" from the blade...maybe a 1/16" over....the 2-7/8" wide boards went through twice, one pass per long edge....the 5" and wider ones? All 4 edges were sent through...made a big mess on the floor, too..
482318
Which still left over an inch wide strip right down the centerline.....I do NOT trust the bandsaw to do that type of cut...wanders around way too much...so...
482319
Disston Rip saw...old enough that the "8" is inside of the "D" in the very readable etch...5-1/2 ppi, 28" long....and very sharp....Blue clamp to keep the board from tilting over....after the first one or two starter strokes, everything else was the full length stroke. got about 2/3s of the way down..
482320
While letting the kerf guide the saw...then flip the board end for end..
482321
Watch out for that last stroke...clamp also kept the kerf closed up tight....but that was an inch or two below where the saw stopped cutting...fingers are still a bit sore from slamming into the board...set this one aside..
482322
Still have 3 more to do...just not as long of a board...this one was almost 40" long....the others run between 18-3/8" and 22-1/2" long.

Dryer was done, and so was I....load up the Hamper, and trudge upstairs....legs were as tight as a snare drum....Laundry done, Cardio Workout...done.

Depending on the Dungeon Creek, today...I might try to saw the rest...we'll see...
Stay tuned...

Completed the rest of the resaws...but, since these 3 are a bit shorter...used a different vise,
482350
The one on the end of the bench,,
482351
Had to watch out...as the last stroke was a doooozy....1/8 off-cut also just dropped out of the way
482352
leaving the 5/8" thick slab behind. Which needed planed,,,,
482353

Had 2 boards that were close to each other....just needed one to be sawn..
482355
With a Disston Panel saw...D-8, 10ppi,20" length...
482356
Then the edges were jointed...with a slightly bigger plane..
482357
And then a glue-up...
482358
And then left this sit a day....will work on the rest of the parts, tomorrow. Glue up is the hinged part of the lid...for the Lap Writing Desk

Stay tuned:D

Lid is out of the clamps, glue joint cleaned up..
482375
Whether to show off this face, or..
482376
This face?

Sides: Were laid out last night...cut for length this morning..
482377
Then rough cut on the bandsaw...
482378
This being the cut off...sides then needed planed smooth and flat..
482379
Top, Slope, and both faces

Top and front: Needed trimmed for length, and planed flat...
482380

So...NOW I have the "main" parts roughly to size and shape...
482381
Board for the back has been cut for length...still needs planed flat...but, the old body ran out of "Get-up & Go"

482382
Maybe tomorrow, I can plane the back flat, and start of dovetails.....Debating between 1/2 Blind , or, through....

Still haven't decided on what goes inside...yet....

Stay tuned...

Board for the back..
482449
Before the Junior Jack in the background worked it over...
482450
mainly this face...a bit of sanding for the other will do....

Dry fit...showed I needed this much removed from one edge..
482451
Just a little of the top?
482452
I think I can do that...

Wheeled out a Socket Maker, again....
482453
have to move the fence a few times, but...
482454
No biggie....Maybe tomorrow, I can start on the tails?

The way today was going...I'll quit while I'm ahead...yep, one of THEM days..
Stay tuned :D

Late last night ( got bored, again)
lay out..
482512
Saw, and a knife wall..
482513
Chop the show face, first..halfway down..
482514
Flip over, and complete the chops..
482515
Test the fit...
482516
One of the sockets wasn't quite deep enough....

Repeat for the other end...
482517
This time, there were 2 sockets not deep enough....better than being too deep?

And that was it for last night...have something better planned for later today..
482518
And...this will give an idea of what I am working on...
482519
Stay tuned...

steven c newman
07-09-2022, 7:25 PM
Today was just a repeat of last night....just more tails to cut, is all..
482525
Repeat for the other end..
482526
All 4 corners are now dovetailed....
482527
Checking the "Top" for fit....Need to set up another type of plane...next time in the shop...
482528
As I'll need a groove milled all the way around, to house the 1/4" plywood bottom panel...

Also need to plane a couple bevels....where the lid meets the top, and where the lid rests on the front.

Going to be "fun".....stay tuned..

Always interesting!
When you prepare such a long thread with so many pictures, do you do this "off-line" and then post it all at once?
How else would it be posible to avoid someone from interupting your thread with a comment?
Thanks,

Tim

People can comment anytime they feel like it.

Thread is almost like the "Daily News" as I post almost each day's trip to the shop....

I never know how long one of these threads will go....nor how many posts.....

Set up the Stanley 45 to plough a 1/4" x 1/4" groove.
.482565
Then a series of jigs...
482566
Seemed that each side of the box required a slightly different jig...once all 4 side had a groove milled, I could cut a plywood panel to size, and try a dry fit..
482567

everything looking like it will fit...might as well glue this up..
482572
Check for square, of course..
482575
At all 4 corners, too. Before all the clamps and cauls and glue, though..I needed one other set-up..
482578
Because when the clamps come back off...I will need to plane this bevel....so the lid will lay flat...

Just over an hour, today...still made a mess...
482579
Busy day...

Stay tuned..

Monday? Maybe just take the clamps off?

Laid out for a bevel....where the top meets the lid...
482616
Bottom one ....tablesaw is still buried...so..clamp the top to the bench
482617
Yet another use for a tool well? Millers Falls No. 11 Junior Jack to plane away the waste...until the bevel gauge says stop..
482618
Then the 'back" edge of the top needed jointed...to remove a taper...

Along the front edge of the desk, where the lid will rest, when closed....Needed to match the angle of the sides..
482619
using the sides as a guide.

Top was fitted into it's spot....one high spot was planed down...then some glue and clamps..
482620
Ones on the ends were to keep the top from flipping up...

45 minutes in the shop...on a Monday  letting this sit a day...

Stay tuned :D

Out of the forest of clamps...
482720
Cleaned up the glue joints...Lid needs a bevel..
482721
Checked until it fit..
482722
Hinge install..did NOT go as planned...we have other ways...
482723
had to add a round-over to the front edge of the lid..
482724
Using a Stanley #3, Type11 plane, of course..
482725
Let this sit a day...while I figure a couple things out....

Stay tuned..:D

A PIP?
482782
Back corner..
482783
Front corner..
482784
Something to keep the notepad in place..
482785
The Latch....open the lid..
482786
May need a second coat of Witch's Brew Stain?
482787
Area in the middle is sized to a perfect fit..of one of those big yellow "Legal" pads...

Will check later today, to see how the stain dried...may go with a second coat...and then some Amber Shellac over that..

Stay tuned....

One thing nice about taking a few pictures....
482826Is that any defects are bound to show up....went back and tightened that screw down....

New hinges were installed...
482827
And a seal coat of Amber Shellac, 1 pound cut was brushed on....
482828
Intend to go back to the shop, after Lunch....and rub it down with 0000 steel wool...then..
482829
A coat of this stuff.....which is the same varnish I used on that Hobbit Tool Chest...

Debating on adding a pair of small handles to the sides...after the varnish is done.....we'll see..

Stay tuned...almost done.:D

steven c newman
07-15-2022, 6:06 PM
A coat of varnish was brushed on this morning...has dried, and been rubbed down with a clean rag.....then the lid was opened, and the insides of the desk was varnished....waiting on that to dry...

steven c newman
07-15-2022, 10:55 PM
Everything has dried, and been rubbed down...so
482861
Lets see what we got...open the lid, to stash the Olde School Notepad...
482862
Then close and latch the lid..
482863
Then take a look along a side...
482864
Before taking a look around in back...
482865

Even the underside was finished...
482866

Desk is 18-1/2" wide, 13-1/4" deep, and is 5-1/4" tall in back....slightly lower in front. About 2 weeks start to finish....getting slow in me old age?

Ok...camera has died....was worn out, I guess....replace on the next Payday.

There is a few cut-offs in the shop...plus a 1 x 6 x 59" and a 1 x 6 x 66" Maple plank still upstairs.....the longer one even has a bit of live edge going on. Not sure what Project to make with those 2....yet.

Down time in the shop between Projects.....usually means tool maintenance chores....sharpen the dull edges as needed...clean things up, put away most of the tools back where they belong...that sort of thing. That way, when they are needed for the next Project's tasks, they will be ready to go.

Big event coming up......Labor Day Tractor Fest in West Liberty, Ohio.....Last year, I might have walked almost 2 miles, walking through all the vendors....LOTS of Antique Tools to rust hunt.
Will set aside my August Allowance for that weekend....

Thanks for following along with this little Project

All scraps have been resawn down, to about 3/8" thickness....some the tablesaw could make 2 passes and be done...5 boards though....kerf all around, all 4 edges..then the Disston D8 Rip saw to complete the cuts...might just make a new box for the Wards/Stanley No. 78.....and maybe another for the No. 39..3/8"plane. Not sure what will go into the old box, just yet...

New camera tomorrow? Then we'll see how things go...

Will need to start a new Build Blog for them...stay tuned:D

BTW: all tools that were ON the bench, have been put away....tool well has been cleaned out...1/2pound of screws been put away,too...
