Several of the WWing magazines have been getting into hand tools more and more. Something that I think is long overdue.

Is there any one project, article, tool or?? That you particularly enjoyed? Didn’t like or would like to see but haven’t yet?

I enjoyed the series by Adam C. in PWWing. The “perfect handle tool shop” in the latest issue in particular. Then the West Coast magazine Woodworking did that project on a small dovetailed walnut box that was pretty good.

How about you?

Bob Smalser's article in FWW about "everything you ever wanted to know about chisels". Very informative.

I read Bob's article 8 times and still absorp material every time I read it. I have a longish learning curve I guess. But it was very informative especially for the novice.

Hi John,

I would like to see foundational exercises carried out within the context of practical projects.

For instance, a jewelry box made by hand can teach use of hand tools for frame and panel work, mortise and tenons, miters and perhaps keys, or even other methods of corner joints such as box or DT joints. Small project to be sure, but certainly doable by most any woodworker for teaching those principles.

Or a stool. The stool below has practical application and is relatively simple. It does teach one to use a brace and bit, hand planes, back saws for cutting the dados for the steps, and chisels to clean them out. The legs use round tenons, shaped by hand and wedged into the top of the seat. Saws to cut to size including a fret saw for the curves, spoke shaves etc.

As a testament to the degree of difficulty, my granddaughter helped to make this one. Just takes care and a bit of guidance.

In the same vein, is the picture of the plant stand from a Woodsmith article. The point is, entire projects that have use. They could span two issues if there is complexity.
