This is really interesting. If I read it right, you could do this at home using thin veneer.

I see two things wrong with it:
1. I'm not sure I see how the process scales up to commercial sizes and quantities.
2. And if it does, it will require BIG sheets of nearly perfect veneer, and good plywood is already too expensive, thanks anyway.

A friend of mine told me there was a thing called transparent wood. I responded with a "seriously?, what are you smoking?" He then sent me the link.

Thought I'd pass it along. Not real sure what I think about it. It's pretty weird though....
