View Full Version : How to replace Syder/Coupler on Supermax 16/32>?

I have a Supermax 16/32 with a pretty clapped out rubber spyder-coupler. Little tiny pieces of rubber are coming out of it, which makes sense, I've used this like I stole it for the last 2 years. Any videos or instructions with pictures anywhere on how to do this that are deliberately hidden and not indexed by search tool? Is this proprietary info that the manufacturer has DCMA'ed? I've looked for hours, and nothing. Looking specifically for instructions with graphic aids, "remove this bolt and undo that screw" are of no help to me, my reading comprehension is zero but if I have a picture of it, I can rebuild a space shuttle with only 2-3 bolts left over and a catalytic converter delete....

Looks like a standard Lovejoy coupling. I think there are two common ways to replace the spider. Remove the entire motor or gear box or, unbolt one or both hubs from the shaft and pry them apart far enough to remove/install new spider.
Link below is Lovejoy site install instructions. Note that the spider can be had in different elastomers and even metal.
I have no ideas about pricing. It may be cheaper to buy a complete coupling on the bay for the spider then to buy a spider from a proper store.
I have no idea what size your machine uses or how to determine the model number so you can order parts. As long as the tooth count is the same and a similar shaft size it will probably be workable with some trimming.

Some 19-38 models can be used with drum or brush. The 16-32 is a different beast but there are videos on changing the drum for a brush that may help.

As Bill said, looks like a standard "Lovejoy" coupling.

Somehow, you need to separate the "hubs" far enough to get the old spider out and the new one in. If there is enough room on either shaft, it may be possible to loosen whatever is holding the hub in place and slide a hub back. Otherwise, you may need to find a way to move either the motor or the sanding drum.

As best I can tell, on this model, I need to separate the sander head from the mount seems to be the "easiest" way to get the coupling off. Does that compute? The design of the 16/32 seems radically different than the 19/38, in that replacing a drum seems significantly harder and looks to require a puller/bearing press. As long as I keep it aligned during reassembly.
On that note, it seems that the reason why the spyder is failing.....is the 3/8" gap between the two coupling pieces! From the factory! And this was the 2nd warranty replacement! I was able to move reduce the gap "a little" by loosening the set screws and moving them closer for a night and day difference in performance, but the rubber thingy is still clapped out and needs replaced. Of course the coupling half and the spyder are "Out of stock".....

Just went out and looked at mine and there are four bolts that hold the drum housing to the main frame and four bolts holding the motor to the main frame. The four bolts holding the drum housing look the easiest to get a wrench on. I would take that route. You may have to realign the drum to the table after reassembly.

Sounds like maybe the motor comes off easy enough and you do not have to realign the drum. While it is off you may want to install a male/female cord end between the motor and the switch gear.

Out of stock where? Grainger and McMaster-Carr both sell that type of coupling, along with any industrial supply house. If you have a local Motion Industries or Kaman bring it to them and you can buy just the spider.

Traditionally, the color of spider designates it torque rating, so make sure to get the correct "color." Alignment of the coupling hubs is important. Can't remember the tolerance of misalignment allowed, but the Lovejoy site should say. Brian

I'm a woodworker (hobbyist), not a machinist, so no way to accurately measure shaft diameters and coupling sizes or whatever else you would need to know to get the right part. All I know is the two parts are out of stock on Laguna. How does one get the accurate non-laguna parts without having accurate machine tools? Looking at MMCarr, there are far too many options for me to 'guess' this. Is there another side that cross-references Laguna part numbers into something that's "in stock"? Spyder is black rubber, no idea what torque value, Laguna of course does not list specs on their site. In addition, every single other brand coupler I see has one set screw, the laguna has two (on each coupler half). Feel like it's important to get a replacement coupler with 2 set screws as well.

You can get a 6" digital caliper for under $20 that will tell you shaft sizes and do any other measuring you'll need for this job. I use mine for woodworking too, along with an analog one. They're handy to have around.

Well.....the coupler "looks" to be a little "banged up". Given the gap between the coupler halves, from the factory, there's not much spyder left and the couplers are a little banged up.

Don't get too wrapped around the axle with thinking you need precise measurements. They are made in different series for different loads but can easily be told apart with a tape measue. Shat diameter can also be got with a tape measure on the end of the shaft, they are not made in infinite sizes, probably an 1/8" between standard bores. Go to Lovejoys website and look for the dimensions, will be easy to do with a tape measure, done it many times on the factory floor to get a replacement.

Unless your hubs are totally trashed, which I doubt they are, you don't need to replace them. I'll make the assumption that the hubs are keyed to the shafts and if they are don't get too wrapped up about how many setscrews are in each hub. Some manufacturers put only one setscrew in the hub and it's directly one the key, that way you don't booger up the shaft with the second setscrew.

As a woodworker if you can measure the length of a shelf that goes in a cabinet you can make the measurements needed to pick which spider you need. We ain't going to the moon here.

It's a supermax 16/32. As was when I bought it, I can't get them to return calls or emails to tell me the dimensions. It looks like the spyder has 4 doo hickey thingys, everyone I see on the internet has 3....

How similar is the Jet 16-32 to the Supermax 16-32? There's lots of Jet Spyders available, what are the chances the two models use the same spyder? A little desperate here, the spyder is beat up enough to cause some significant slop, and I'm in the middle of a batch of drawers that really can't take up space in the shop much longer.

Take it completely apart and measure the shaft sizes and upgrade to a real Lovejoy coupler. This looks like a cheap imitation. Probably why it's failing. When you reinstall make sure the hubs sandwich the spider snugly. Lovejoy couplings last for a long time unless there is severe misalignment. The largest Lovejoy I ever encountered was on a pump drive on a Cat Excavator double pump drive. That was on the back of a 200 HP engine we were replacing. It acually was marked Lovejoy which is extremely rare on anything Caterpillar. They usually require everything to be marked with their branding.

The time I've spent on the lovejoy website seems to indicate that this course of action is best suited for someone who really knows what they're doing with regard to knowing torque, has a good and precise dial gauges, etc. and has a background in machining, motors, and driveshafts.

I'm but a simple hobbyist woodworker and on these types of repairs tend to limit myself to replacing a broken part with another working part that someone else has determined the correct part #.

I'm having the same situation with a Jet Planer, needed to replace the bed roller bearings (all of them), and eventually figured it out by, as you suggested, taking it apart and measuring things. But they're just bed rollers, so the risk of screwing it up is low. This is the one and only drum and motor I have. I'm not so eager to be experimenting with "maybe this is the right size?" on a tool I depend on (more than the planer).

Maybe this speaks to my ignorance of drum sanders, surely I can't be the first person to replace a spider on one, nor the first person to do so with a "real Lovejoy coupler". Hoping that first person exists and has a part # saved in an invoice somewhere.

Late to the party, as I thought this would have been solved quickly.

If going full-on replacement, I'd suggest the Lovejoy 'J-I-S' option (Jaw In-Shear). The 'spider' is external; you can replace the elastomeric component in future and never touch the coupler halves again. Write the part numbers on a piece of tape and stick it on the bottom side of the sander frame. You'll need only the horsepower and shaft sizes.

The motor horsepower and frame size are easy (aka nameplate data). Frame size will tell you the motor shaft size via NEMA lookup. Just a guess, but I'd suspect yours is probably a NEMA 56C frame...?? (5/8" shaft)

Remove the old coupler halves and measure the drum shaft size (OD) or the drum coupler-half's bore (ID). Motor & drum (driven unit) are usually the same size, but measure just in case. You don't need a micrometer; shafts generally run in 1/8" increments - so as long as you can get within that tolerance you're done.

Take those 3 pieces of info to a Motion Industries or other such local motor shop/bearing supply house, tell them what you want. Viola.

I agree with Malcomb that the external 2 piece spider would be a good investment for the future. That style is larger in diameter so you need to make sure that clearance won't be a factor. If you have the shaft sizes the rest is easy. Just look at the series that is approximate and you will be golden. You could get an extra spider if you feel the need. If the guard has plenty of clearance then by all means get the larger Lovejoy in either style.

Before someone castigates me for excessive spending of someone else's money, the J-I-S is way more expensive, but would appear to be a good option with Mr. Colson's stated research/repair aversion.

Great answers! Unfortunately, https://www.lovejoy-inc.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/JawIn-Shear.pdf only shows smallest size as LS090, and what's on there now is LS070. Not sure what if any that changes in terms of rotating mass/balancing....

I didn't realize the JIS didn't cover the full size range, i.e. down to the LS070. The LS090 is larger and will easily carry the Hp/torque, and should be (looks to be) available with the 5/8" bore. Lovejoy will make sure the hubs are balanced and the increased rotating mass of the LS090 will be insignificant compared to the drum's mass.

So, the only issue will be - as Mr. Blue pointed out - do you have room for the larger coupling?

The LS090 is 2.75"OD. (~3.5" is for the LS099 size.) Then you just need to verify that will fit within the space available in your Supermax.

I have a similar Jet, and can't open the hood right now, but memory says this might fit. If not, my apologies for the rabbit hole.

Look at the Lovejoy LC series. It is like the L series except the "spider" is a wrap that inserts from the outside with a retaining collar.

This might be a silly question but have you called Supermax? Their customer service and technical support is excellent in my experience. Seems like they could send you a new spider for a few bucks and walk you though installation.

This might be a silly question but have you called Supermax? Their customer service and technical support is excellent in my experience. Seems like they could send you a new spider for a few bucks and walk you though installation.

Sorry I've not responded sooner, busy with remodeling a laundry room and kitchen.

I would pry the two hubs apart, take the spider out and count the legs, looks to be three. While the spider is out measure the thickness of the leg and the outside diameter of the spider and then match it up with a like spider from McMaster. If the spider is too far gone to get the O.D. just use the O.D. of the hub.

I don't see a need to go to a larger coupling, some engineer already put the proper sized one in the machine. How long have you had the machine, and how much do you use it? A year, two or more and if the coupling just took a dump now, I don't think that's too bad.

Oh, and the hubs don't look bad enough to be spending a bunch on replacing them.

My bad, just looked at the pictures on a larger screen and I see you can't "just pry the hubs apart".
I think you'll have to remove either the motor or the other shaft so you can measure and replace the spider.

Or get a precise measurement of each shaft diameter, rounded up or down to the nearest metric or fractional size, and key size then order a complete replacement coupling.

Update on this...
Laguna has been heard from. Apparantly incorrect assembly of the coupler/spider was a "thing" in the past, since rectified. I got one of the ones where it was slapped on....

Got exact replacement spider and coupler halves from Grainger. Shipped in one day.
Spider replacement is no problem.
The problem is, how to replace the couplers and get the two shafts lined up? Per Laguna, the drum head MUST be removed to do this, but it's a head scratcher to them on how to get the two shafts lined up perfectly on reassembly. Like I said previously, the two existing couplers are banged (from dozens of hours of metal to metal contact) up enough to where I don't think they're going to "mate" as intended with the replacement spider. They're getting replaced.

Do you have a manual for the machine? Would coupling replacement be covered in the manual?

Looking at your pictures I think you could remove the motor and then remove the drum coupling half without removing the drum. Could you clean the machine and scribe around any parts that have to be removed and then replace them while lining up the scribe marks? You could use a short straight edge to line up the coupling halves by checking at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. A piece of metal banding or any other short, thin piece of metal could be used as a straight edge.

I have a hard time believing that the manufacturer can't give any good advice on how to replace the coupling.

If that results in the alignment of the shafts changing, as Jerry said, you can use a short straightedge to check shaft alignment. The whole point of a flexible coupler is to allow the shafts to NOT be "perfectly" aligned - it will have some specs on how much mis-alignment can be tolerated in each measurement.

I would think unless there is a major engineering fail the motor and drum should be level with each other and squaring and aligning side to side being the only challenge. Even then that shouldn't be an issue. Leave the motor base bolts loose and rotate the drum while the coupler halves and spider are fully engaged. It should self center. As I said if the vertical alignment isn't spot on they did a horrible job in designing this. Once you rotate it several times you should be able to tighten the motor base down. It's should go smoothly. You don't want excessive misalignment. That will take the spider out quickly but a small amount of misalignment is acceptable.

I am surprised you got a reply from Laguna. I have exactly the same problem with my Supermax 16-32. Mine has less than 10 hours and still doesn't track properly as well as the worn out spider. I've been hassling Laguna for 5 months now. Woodcraft, where I purchased the machine, hasn't been a help either. Both claim they have never heard of either of these problems.
Can I get the Grainger numbers for the couplers and spider from you. Also any updated information on how the install went, or didn't? Be prepared to become a Laguna repair person if you buy on of these.
Just a bit of background info to limit replies. I've been working with the Preformax 16-32 for 15 years without problems. I know how to wrap the sandpaper. I know how to feed the machine.
