Not quite the same thing, but a 'Jeopardy' question last night involved using iron and wood to produce wootz, a form of steel similar to Damascus steel.
Had to look that one up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wootz_steel
(The wood in this case is actually bamboo, used as a source of carbon.)

I think wootz steel was used to make Damascus steel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_steel).
