So, I was bidding on an online antiques auction, and it was a live auction. Each item as it was closing had a bid button below it, and if you click that button, you just bid the current bid, and there is no “are you sure?” option. It bids. So, my hand slipped and hit the iPad and I accidentally bid $50 on this Japanese screen, but I’m not mad. I won. I never would have bid, and never thought it would go for $50, but now that I have it, I am going to incorporate it somewhere in my decor.
it seems really old. It is relief carved and each carving hand painted. (I assume- looks hand painted). Closer inspection where there is a chip, and it seems this was coated with some sort of plaster-like material and maybe the carvings were actually pressed into that while wet.
So, is this old? Is it rare? Anyone have a link to info on the technique?
