A Jet 6" open stand jointer just came up on a local online auction. Looks in good condition from pictures, no rust on tables. Anyone have an idea of the value?

$200-300 might be what it is worth but will easily sell for double that.

I picked up my Powermatic today, won on Purple Wave auction the grand total is $620.81 I bid high because it was said to have a 7 inch blade. It is a 6 inch. Buyer beware. (Buyer do your research)

I've never heard of anyone making a 7" jointer.

If it helps:

Bought Delta 6" jointer with closed stand and mobile base for some $300, few years back. I added the missing pulley cover on the back ($25). Used it for 2-3 years and sold it for ~$300, in 2019.

On FB, a similar looking Craftex is listed for CAD 450, a Delta is listed for CAD 350, RexCut for $315, and a King for CAD 1000. These all look better in condition that the jointer I had.

I sold my 30+ year old 6” closed stand Jet Jointer, one year ago this month. I was hoping to get 200 bucks for it. Then I started pricing used jointers and was shocked to see how expensive they have gotten…probably because of the pandemic nonsense. So I said what the hell and put it up for $500 and ended up getting 475. It took two days to sell it. So don’t be shocked at the prices people are asking. PS the jointer was in good condition but it was still 30 years old.

I paid about $400 (110volt, six inch) for a used Shop Fox last summer. There was a jet 6" jointer on my local facebook for sale at $700 a couple days ago that sold in under 8 hours. They are very simple machines. If they are in good tune, one price. If not in good tune you have to figure out if you can tune them from the lower second price.

Jerry, my advice is to wait and get an 8" jointer (if you have the space). No doubt it will cost a little more, however a 6" may quickly be outgrown .. unless you are making boxes. Wider is better.

I bought a Jet JJ6CSX 6" jointer at an estate auction last summer for $225 as I recall, though of course it was more with the buyer's premium and tax. It's a nice machine by my standards. I was lucky to get it for that price.

If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Yesterday I thought I had discovered something rare, today I feel like an idiot. My search for an 8 inch continues. I am determined to find a "made in the USA".

Heh, might have to park outside if I get a 6" jointer. That's okay though the truck will be closer to the dog house.

I think one of the harbor freight jointers used a 7” blade.

Either way, $250 tops for a 6” jointer.

The thing that I have noticed is that there are usually about 10-12 six inch jointers listed for every 8 inch. So yeah I would not pay more than what you can sell it for ,about $300 tops.

Jet is currently getting $1450 + $170 shipping, Grizzly is getting ~$1K for their smaller 6" jointer (used to be about $700-800) and another $180 shipping, Ridgid is asking about $800 (I think this used to be about $500?).

As such the time when you could get a 6" jointer for $100 - $300 is likely a thing of the past with all the inflation.

I'd say that $400-600 is more a reasonable price given what a low end used jointer goes for, and for the Jet I'd expect it to be closer to $800.

I sold my 6" closed stand jointer in summer 2020 for about $350, I could have gotten probably $400 for it based on the inquiries I was getting, but I needed it out of the shop more than I needed the extra $50.

That was before the used tool market went nuts. If you were able to snag that 6" Jet for $300, you would be doing great, considering crappy Craftsman fixed outfeed jointers are being listed here for nearly $300.

I would agree with the other Andrew, the days of getting a Jet/Delta/Grizzly/PM/SF 6" stationary jointer for $200-$300 are over. There are 2 decent Delta jointers listed on the local craigslist (no 8" jointers, there almost never are), and they are listed at $500 and $600. Other than the one ton 12' Northfield, the other seven jointers listed are garbage.

Not everyone who sells stuff is smart enough to compare new prices before they sell. As well a lot of people ,myself included sell stuff at fair prices and like to help others starting out. Some people just want what they paid 25 years ago, sometimes they get it sometimes not.

True, people make mistakes, or under price things for other reasons. However, it's less likely to happen now, due to all the focus on inflation expectations.

I have no idea what "fair price" might mean to any one individual, nor do I think there's a good way to guess at it, since it's completely subjective, so I don't think it's really relevant to the discussion.

Bought a WEN 8-Inch Spiral Benchtop Jointer last year - very impressive use out of it, milled some rough sawn 8/4 Red Oak on it many times. Some folks might scoff at a WEN but if they saw results, they might change their mind. That jointer can be bought for $429.99 right now, 2 year warranty also.

As far as the used market - there's a 6" Powermatic listed for $1500 and a 6" Jet for $799. A couple of benchtop Craftsman beat up pieces of crap 4 1/2" for about $300 each - give or take $20.
Pretty typical for around here.

The auction company has offered to return 1/2 of the sales commission for the Powermatic which will bring the price down to $585. I like that it was made in Tennessee. The motor is USA too. It fits in well with the rest old my old USA tools.

I think this one of the ones mentioned by Matt Day

Just sold my old Jet JJ6-CSX closed stand jointer. I bought it 20 years ago for $499. I had people tripping over each other to get it for $725. It was in nice shape but these prices are obscene.

The old Powermatic is looking good. I think this the first time the OEM knives have been out. A light honing and they are very sharp. I am getting excited.

That's good to hear. I have the "deluxe" version of that jointer with the longer tables. Bought it many years ago for about $525, iirc. Might be time to start shopping for an upgrade.

Even though the knives say powermatic on them it’s still good medicine to research that they are in fact correct. The bevel width looks wide to me. Thick knives will have a wider looking bevel.
5/32 thick with a 45 degree bevel ?
Good Luck nice find.

I like Powermatic machines …but not Powermatic stamped on knives . I want to see M2 or T1 on the knives.

Thanks for the info on knives. I will check the specs before reinstalling. The wood honing block was made for a set from a Jet. The thickness and angle matches these Powermatics. I will be thinking about a Byrd helical cutter for it in the future.

These knives are 1/8 with a 45 degree bevel. My 4 inch Delta knives are 1/8 - 45 as well.
