First, my disclaimer, I know nothing about lathes, but:

Did any of you guys notice ALL the templates hanging on the wall in back of the lathe?

Also, the "carriage" motor hanging off the front of the lathe. Is that to power the "carriage"? What brand of lathe is that?

The lathe is a hapfo ap 5000 hydro king ,and the motor does run the carriage back and forth .

I think your asking about the cutter right? it is 3/4 by 3/4 six inches long high speed steel ,it is hollow ground and v cut on the under side .I have a special grinder that holds the tool at a specific angle , First thing I do is change all the angles when I get a new bit ,it takes some fiddling to get the perfect angle setting on the grinder but after that it works well.

robert, here`s some shots of the cutters mine uses. i grind the profile on my old converted surface grinder using an indexing vice to set the angles. if you wouldn`t mind i`d like to see pictures of your grinding set-up? fyi, i buy blank tool steel from msc industrial, if memory serves it`s under 10 bucks for 1/2x1/2 out of m2
