Prepping Redwood

A Korbel Redwood we planted 21 years ago finally succumbed to bifurcation, (trunk split 20’ above the ground) and will be taken down next month. It has a diameter of 17”. What I have read on other posts on Redwoods: It can be turned, need a mask, very soft wood. What kind of prepping should I apply. Very new to turning, I will not need it for a year.

Redwood trees have a lot of sapwood. It is white, not brown/red like the heartwood.
