View Full Version : Advice on vase shape

A few days ago I was given some free wood - a walnut log and a large burl. It took me a couple of days to cut up the wood. I got some bowl blanks and some “vase” blanks from both the burl and the walnut. I put the vase blanks on the lathe and cut just enough to see what I have to work with.

First question: See below the two walnut cylinders. The walnut is fresh and very wet. I know how to deal with wet bowl blanks, but is it possible to hollow out a large cylinder while wet? Or should I put them away until dry?

Second question: As you can see, the burl cylinders have voids (and are slightly wet). It’s making me a little nervous thinking about hollowing them out with the voids (also thinking about the structural soundness of the burl). Can I proceed as I normally would with straight grained wood, or is there something else I need to know? Also thinking about epoxying the heck out of it for safety sake - how dry does the wood have to be to do that?

Thanks,

David
