Had quite a bit of scraps, cluttering up the shop.....threw out the worst bits...too short, cracked, split,BIG knots..that sort of thing. Had these 5 to do "something" with..
474639
And this pile..
474640
Decided to trim these just a bit...Re-saw with the tablesaw...fence set to ~1/2". Most of the strips had one bad face...so that face was getting "peeled" off....which left this chunky one to do..
474641
Figured I could get a few slices out of it, and toss out the bad face. Could NOT find the shop-built push stick for thin wood....had to make a new one. Some of the strips took 2 passes...with the off-cuts getting tossed into the "Burn Barrel"...Results?
474642
Some of the thinner strips, were already like that...~1/4" thick.

Got to thinking ( always a dangerous adventure)
474643
Maybe a couple small boxes?
474644
Maybe make a separate lid for each....might even have a nice panel for the lid?
474645

Hmmm, might keep me busy, for a while? Wood is mainly scraps of Oak and Ash.....

Stay tuned...:D

Boxes would have been too shallow, so..
474669
Add a piece to each side piece...some I needed to joint an edge...but
474670
Bead of glue, and 2 clamps..repeat 3 times...
474671
Let these sit overnight,,,tomorrow, I can ...MAYBE..get parts for Box #2 glued up..once the clamps come off...
474672
Will need to cut, joint and match part, first

Still trying to decide on how to join the corners...and what sort of top and bottom to do...

Stay tuned:D

First batch is out of the clamps, cleaned up, squared up, and all the same height..
474735
Made use of the recently rehabbed No.8 Millers Falls...next..
474733
Used it some more, to get these ready for glue and clamps..
474734
Have to let this mess sit overnight, no rush...trying to decide what sort of joinery to use..
474732
Might go with through dovetails?

Laundry Detail, today....1 hour shop time, so far....right leg is having "issues"....and camera was too....

Stay tuned...

Batch #2 is out of the clamps...
474825
Needing the ends cut square, after these were all ripped to the same width...2-5/8"
474826
And, they all needed to be flattened...of course..
474827
It be flat, now. So...now I have enough parts to make 2 boxes..
474828
Including panels for the bottoms of both boxes..

As for stuff that didn't "Make the Grade"?
474829
They all have a "date" with the Fire Pit later...once I can haul this thing upstairs...

Going to try through dovetails...next trip to the shop, we'll see...

Stay tuned:D

Got ONE corner done, today...then I got in a hurry, started making mistakes....decided to just stop for the day..
Dry fit, corner No. 1, Box #1...
475020

I did use a coping saw, today..
475021
Cleaning out between the pins...and then the tails..

Problems began with corner #2,,,,
475022
As I wound up with these layout lines ( on corner #1) reversed...cut those pins off...

Next time in the shop..I am taking my time, double checking each part BEFORE I make the first..
475023
Saw cut.

Hardware from Hobby Lobby is now IN the shop...Handles, Screws, Hinges, Latches....about 5 bags of parts. Should be enough to make 2 boxes, right?

steven c newman
03-04-2022, 9:19 AM
Corners #2 and #3 are done....kept double checking to make sure them pins were facing the correct way...
475134
Tried out a different saw, too...wasn't happy with the way the No. 68 was cutting...so
475135
Corner #3...vs Geo. Bishop No. 10.......

Next time in the shop..corner #4 needs to be done..
475136

A selection of Hardware has arrived in the shop...
475137
All from Hobby Lobby.

As corner corner #3? When a mallet is required to do a dry fit....should be tight enough?

Stay tuned :D

steven c newman
03-05-2022, 12:16 PM
When I said corner #3 was tight..
475226
Any further in needed a mallet....
Corner #4 was a tad looser..
475227
And the pins were standing a bit proud....

Might as well glue this box up..
475228
Will trim those "proud" pins later, today....once the clamps have been removed...
475229
Then see about adding the bottom panel to it?

Stay tuned...

Box came out of the clamps for a bit...corners cleaned up and square..top and bottom edges were leveled with the Millers Falls No. 8...a panel for the bottom was trimmed roughly to size...bead of glue brushed around the bottom edges..then the clamps returned ..
475385
Let this sit a day..or two ( was a bit busy, Saturday..)
475386
As the Drill Press Stand build took up my time...
475387
And more clamps to put away....finally got an hour to work on the box, yesterday..clamps came off, without any funny noises..
475388
Goal was to trim the bottom panel flush with the sides of the box....longer sides, I used the plane...ends?
475389
Were simply sanded flush...which left the bottom to plane flat..
475390

Next time in the shop, I can start on a lid...

Stay tuned..

Today was a Monday...shop is closed on Mondays...safer, that way...VOE...

Lid gets a collar under it...better for the hinges and latch. Corners will be a single dovetail, with 2 half pins....Then glue the collar to the panel....

That will happen, tomorrow (Tuesday)...I hope...

Stay tuned...

Just tried ONE corner....will try again tomorrow...might turn out better, that way..

steven c newman
03-08-2022, 5:13 PM
Ok...collar build..
475475
This is the general idea...gives enough wood for hinges to be attached to..
475476
Corners are one LARGE tail, with a pair of small half pins...got corner #4 to do, today..
475477
Saw cuts made..needs chopped..
475478
Then the half pins to match. Then some glue, a brush and a mob of clamps..
475479
Glue the collar together, then add the panel for the top of the lid....a look inside..
475480
Let this sit a day...then clean it up, and see about some hardware to attach the lid to the box....

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
03-09-2022, 3:28 PM
Lid came out of the clamps....needing squared up, corners needed cleaned up...width was fine, length was a little long....fixed all of that...next.
475554
gaps needed fixed..and not all were the box's fault...some was the lid's..
475555
We have ways..
475556
Millers Falls No.8, Type 2....leveled both...no more gaps. Might as well add the hinges...
475557
And a latch..
475558
Amber Shellac the insides..
475559
And the outsides...
475560
And let this sit a spell.....then rub it out a bit, then a second coat....

Stay tuned, almost time to start Box #2..

steven c newman
03-10-2022, 2:55 PM
Second coat has been brushed on...letting it sit a bit. Burrito Lunch does have to settle....then I can start on Box #2....

Stay tuned....Box Joint 101....Film at 2300 hrs...

steven c newman
03-10-2022, 7:26 PM
Ok, Box #1 has has 2 coats, and been rubbed down a bit..we'll see how the pictures do...this time..
Front view..
475630
Then an end view..
475631
Not quite as fancy around in back..
475632
Trying to show off the lid..
475633
Fancy grain..

In the process of moving the Drill Press to it's new stand...found this thing...
475634
Made of Spalted hard Maple....and I am about to put it to work...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-10-2022, 11:23 PM
Ok....need to get the 4 parts/sides ready..
475639
Needed squared up, and the lengths matched up...makes things a bit easier...
475640
When things line up....Once this was corrected, I could start on laying out some fingers..
475641
Doing the long sides first...That 6mm chisel set the spacing....working in towards the center...then adjust the last couple fingers to fit...Then carry the lines down..
475642
Move the chisel out of the way...Geo. Bishop is coming...
475643
I set one of the 2 sides out of the way, for now....and
475644
That bar is set to cut only 1/2" deep.....like a depth stop. To adjust it, loosen the handle a tad, and slide the blade up or down, as needed....or flip the blade over, as use as a rip saw..

Then the chisels go to work...show side is chopped halfway down, then flip the board over, and finish the chops...
475645
Then use these fingers to lay out the matching ones on the End board.....saw, chop, flip, and chop....then a dry fit or two....as things were a tad tight...finally got the corner to slide together..
475646

One corner done, only 3 more to do

Stay tuned..

03-11-2022, 2:28 PM
Laundry Detail: Today was getting the clothes into the dryer. Since I'd be there the 45 minutes the dryer will need....might as well get another corner done....

Was already marked out...needed to be sawn..
475655
Tip: I rub a candle along the plate, just above the tooth line....helps the saw to glide better, IN the cut...

Then set up to do some chopping..
475656
Show Face first, about half way down, then flip over and complete the chopping...

Use these fingers ( the board's, NOT mine)
475657
Just trace around each finger....then saw on the waste side of the lines....I seemed to have left too much line...
475658
Was a bit TOO snug....pare the sticky spots a bit...until..
475659
It almost fits....still had a couple spots to pare...then...
475660
Corner #2 is fitted. Dryer was done....that will be enough, for a Friday...

Might see about corners #3 and #4 later...stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-12-2022, 9:24 AM
Maybe later today....AFTER the Boss' trip to Lowes and back ( I am the driver) I can get the last 2 corners done? Takes about 45 minutes per corner....getting slow in me old age?

steven c newman
03-12-2022, 5:11 PM
Boss has postponed her trip. So, I spent about 3 hours in the shop, today...was able to get corners #3 and #4 milled..then..
475726
One last dry fit, before..
475727
Lay them all out, and get ready to glue these up..Checking for square the entire time...used the bench vise as a 3rd hand..
475728
Both to hold the box while the first clamps went on, then hold things steady while the last ones are placed..one more check for square...
475729
Nice view? I also was able to cut a panel to size, for the box's bottom...
475730
Letting the clamps sit a day....then level the bottom edges, and glue the panel to the bottom of the box

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
03-13-2022, 1:45 PM
Out of the clamps this morning...about an hour before Lunch gets here...
475767
Needing a bit of work....checked to see how square it was..
475768
Well...could have been worse....cleaned the longer sides up..
475769
Gaps were filled as needed...worked my way around until..
475770
Almost done...needed to level the top and bottom edges...not sure which will be which, yet...might as well do both...test the bottom panel for size..
475771
A hair too wide is ok...can plane that off after the glue dries...bead of glue, smeared along the edge with a brush...then 8 clamps
475772
Let this sit a day, while I figure out where to cut this panel..
475773
And make some sort of lid out of it.....fancy grain, or..not so fancy grain....panel is Red Oak..

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-14-2022, 10:43 AM
Box came out of those clamps last night, Bottom was planed to match the sides of the box.

Lid blank was cut to size....was thick enough not to need a collar...once the lid matched the box....time for some hinges...
475836
and a latch..
475837
Small block plane to add a bevel to the corners...
475838
And other edges...
475839
Plane is a Stanley No. 60-1/2 Cordovan Low Angle.
475840
Hinges work....

This morning, the box got it's first coat of Amber Shellac...letting that sit a spell....while I haul the Boss around on HER errands..

Stay tuned

Do you make your own shellac? Brush, spray or French polish?

steven c newman
03-14-2022, 3:15 PM
Bullseye Amber Shellac, straight from the can, with a brush....

steven c newman
03-14-2022, 6:57 PM
2nd coat, after a sanding by hand with 220 grit, then rubbed down with 0000 steel wool...
475862
And...a "showy" lid..
475863
Yes, I decided to add handles on the ends of the box..
475864
Not too bad, for basically all hand tools...

Waiting to see how it turns out,,,,

We have a family friend that likes to do crafts....thinking I might see what she can do with both of these boxes...

Stay tuned..
