Rather true! Don’t get my winter coat out until -20 C or you look silly. Spent two winters at -40 C but it never went below -52 C not even at night. Had to take a car to the grocery store because it was mostly dark and the polar bears liked shoppers returning on foot. Had to buy a 4’ extension for my ice auger as it was 6’ thick. Drilled the hole one day, fished the next.

The spring was fun at breakup, got to canoe 50 miles down rapids with ice cubes the size of small cars rolling down with you!

I got a good laugh out of that. The only coat I wear all winter is a zip up sweater. Yesterday morning was -29*C & I wore my sweater. I do keep a heavy parka, gloves, boots & a hat in the trunk of the car if needed, but I don't think I wore them at all last winter.

That was humorous.

I was working in Virginia in January one year, +5C and sunny, no wind.

The construction crew were outside pouring a reinforced concrete pad for a fuel tank, and I was watching.

I was wearing a flannel shirt and jeans, mug of tea in hand, while all the workers were wearing jackets, hats and gloves.

The local Civil Engineer, who I had spoken to many times but never met, drove up, got out of the car and said “OK, let’s play spot the Canadian “.

He made me laugh……Regards, Rod

Explain to me what a "winter jacket" is? You actually have to wear long pants?

A winter jacket is a fashion statement that ends at the waist, the leather car seat can better treat your haemorrhoids. Wool dress pants do fine with a winter coat for most daily activities at -40C. Ice fishing required snow pants as you sit with your back to the wind for hours.

In the last few years I've found I need a little more thermal protection - especially coming from Vancouver where the weather is normally sub-tropical.
I wear a T-shirt most of the year but in winter I add a sweatshirt and heatable under jacket under my leather jacket when I ride the Harley (insured year-round).
My unheated garage is my workshop so over the T-shirt I add a down vest. I always wear a hat (religious garb otherwise why bother?)
When I visit Alaska, I take my down jacket, but it's colder up there.

Something I remember from consulting for a company in Saskatoon I’ve never seen around here: a power outlet at every car parking space to plug in the engine block heater. Maybe Canadian cars can’t take the cold as well as Canadian people.

I was on a conference call with people from California one sunny winter's day. They asked how cold it was in MN; I said not bad, around -5F. They asked if school was cancelled. I said that our elementary school guidelines were that if it got below -12F (actual or windchill) then outdoor recess was cancelled. They were speechless:)

In my running days, -30 was our cutoff for running outside. Anyone else know what it feels like to have a penis thaw out? Pray you never do.

Read an article the other day about an Olympic skier that had the same problem. Had the same comment as yours about the thawing process.

For me, ice fishing means looking at the fresh seafood on ice at local fish market.

In grade school my wife and all the girls had to wear skirts all winter. Temps as low as 020F. Tall socks but exposed knees.
