I’ve been thinking about/ wanting a wooden Jack plane for quite awhile. I am hesitant to go the eBay route and as much as I’d like to get an old street the cost would have y’all howling at me for spending that much on a roughing plane. So, suggestions?

Hi there are many sites that sell used wooden planes. Wood by Wright has links on his hime page to a list of them. Patrick Leach of super tool also sells used tools. You can contact him here: leach@supertool.com

Bought two at my Re-Store, $10 each. One became a good jack the other a great scrub plane. The fun part of old tools is trying to understand how the old craftsmen worked. I would restore an old one, then build yourself an exotic one.

I bought a new Japanese wooden pull plane to understand it and have had no luck with a shaving whatsoever, so it does not always work!

I made a wooden jack plane when I had VERY little woodworking experience. After the initial head scratching and watching a few videos, it was way easier than I thought it would be and it came out great. I initially made it a single iron, but recently converted it to a double iron. Again, I had minimal skill. I also made a 26” jointer plane. They are both my favorite planes. They are both laminated and cross-pin style.

My “fore” plane is a transitional jack. I bought it for $8 + shipping on the bay a couple years ago and just filed the mouth bigger. The pandemic pricing of old tools is insane right now so I don’t know how realistic that is.
