My 30th birthday is coming up and my wife wants to get me something nice. What I really need is a nice accurate square.

I know I could get a starrett or even a cheaper square and still have it be accurate, but I want something that will be special everytime I pick it up and use it.

I've been looking at blue spice tool works and I really like the looks of their green try square with the cocobolo insert, but I'm curious what else is out there. Are there any other artisan toolmakers you guys recommend?

Have a look at Colen Clenton's squares.
Have to put my hand up for the Aussie :) (no affiliation)

2 Aussies often come up, but I think supply is very limited:
- Chris Vesper (https://www.vespertools.com.au) (his bevel gauges are also well-regarded)
- Colen Clenton (https://hntgordon.com.au/collections/recalibratable-squares).

Bridge City tools (https://bridgecitytools.com/products/ts-2v2-try-square) has a distinctive design

Contact Chris Vesper. These are essentially infilled machinist squares. Highly accurate and will stay that way forever. Tabbed to be self-levelling. I have them in 4” and 7” models.

Good call to invest in quality square - great ROI for hand tool WW’er.

+1 to Derek’s suggestion. Vespers stuff is as good as it gets. Alternatively, can’ Go wrong with Starrett, especially for larger squares. Either way, your investment will generate good returns.

I agree on Vesper’s stuff, I own a few of Chris’s tools and they all are high quality. From what I have seen lately Chris isn’t taking much orders except his Matched set’s for orders but worth trying.
