As part of my LR remodel and trimming project I am going to build a new breakfast bar. I built one out of DF with Walnut trim when we first bought our house. It was built on 4 fold-down supports and was functional and solid. My wife didn't like seeing the supports, and regardless the wood types aren't going to work with the current trim/wood plan.

So, the old bar will go into my office upstairs above the shop (some day).

I am planning to build he new one with hidden support and fixed. Our LR is small, so I am trying to keep the bar as shallow as possible and still be functional.

I am thinking 16" or less.

Any thoughts on depth of bar would be appreciated.

Try sitting yourself at your current breakfast bar, and looking at where your feet and knees are -- the way you like to sit. Those might be the limit of how shallow your new bar can be.

16" is plenty.

You can always measure like Jamie says and just see what you want. If you really want to geek out about it, I use an ergo book called "Human Dimensions & Interior Space" as a reference book for my projects.

As Andy says, you're more than fine with 16"
