From that last Project..
473036
1/2" x 5-1/2" by random lengths...Red Oak...and a 3/8" thick chunk of Ash..

Looking around for a small project, remember a Desktop Organizer from Paul Sellers I made a few years back....thought I would try it again, so the plans were downloaded, again..
473037
Have already changed the cut list....to suit what I have on hand...
473038

Will worry about that drawer, when I get there...
473039
Biggest thing, was to get the 4 sides cut...and a lid and a bottom panel..
473040
The Panels...1/2" x 5-1/2" x 12-1/2"....and..
473041
These 4 pieces...sitting upside down on the bench. Ripped for width of 4", with the skinny top pieces at 2". Lengths adapted to fit the bottom/top panels.

And that was about it for the morning session.....

Stay tuned..:D

Got bored last night, watching the weather ( or, rather lack of) so figured an hour in the shop late last night might help...
First off, Paul uses a solid wood panel to provide the "floor" of the top compartment, sitting on glued in "slips". Hmmm, well..thinking some decent 1/4" Plywood, sitting in some grooves/rebates could work just as well. Wanted to get those done, BEFORE any dovetailing get started...

That piece across the front....gets a rebate..
473043
While the other 3 boards get a groove to match..
473044
Rebate maker..
473045
1/4" x 1/4" rebate...Red Oak tends to get a bit.."squirrely" Then reset the fence, and plough the matching grooves..
473046

Should have stopped right here...but...

Not liking them HUGE dovetails in the plan....decided to try to lay out some more to my liking...Paul does tails first...I, on the other hand, like pins first...

Tried the tails first layouts....brain wasn't getting the concept very well....stopped BEFORE any bad saw cuts were made...then just laid out the pins...
473047

Right leg was telling me it was QUITTING TIME! so, before any saw cuts were made...called it a night.

Weather today is not fit for Man Nor Beasty outside..be a good day to just sit around IN the shop....I can saw and chop the pins and tails, while sitting on my shop stool...

Stay tuned....:D

Ok...Laundry Detail at 2100 hrs....so...did some more lay out work...and 2 extra cuts to mark out..
473097
Had to be careful where this thing was cutting...
473098
Needed to leave this tab...
473099
And had to be careful where I chopped..
473100
Then an Atkins No. 50 to clean things up..
473101
Mainly to trim the tab for rough length....then use these pins to lay out the tails, then cut the tails, and chop out the waste...then a dry fit..
473102
Something holding things up? this won't go any further down...kind of rocks in the middle....hmmm?
473103
Better to be oversized, than too small. Once this is trimmed to fit, things will close up...sealing off the square hole from the groove. Which is why I had to take my time with the layouts....

I might dig around tomorrow, and locate a new blade for that coping saw..
473104
Blade almost as old as that Atkins No. 50.....about time for a new blade?

Stay tuned, 3 more corners to do, then trim the plywood to size..
Kind of snowed in, at the moment....

steven c newman
02-04-2022, 2:53 AM
Corner is close enough, for now...will close up when the clamps go on..
473113
And a start on corner #2 has been laid out...
473114
Plywood will need a trim, though..
473115
Once all the sides are done, and before a glue up happens.

Stay tuned...

Hmm, honey-do jobs...gotta love them....NOT. had to put off the shoptime for a while, today. Then, when I finally got to the shop, was only able to put in 90 minutes of work....too tired, too sore, and getting flustered.....had 3 tasks to do, today....Task #1 was to complete the corner #2's dovetails....the Atkins Coping saw wasn't working out..switched it out with a Millers Falls version...it even had a sharper blade :D
473204
mainly to clean up after the chisels, and trim that stub tenon...dovetail saw for a few cuts..
473205
Chisels to chop out the waste...clean up with the coping saw (like a rasp?) then a sharp No.2 pencil to trace around the pins...then over to the bandsaw to make a few cuts...
473206
Why the bandsaw? It does a better job than I do, on angled cuts. plus I can see the lines better, while staying on the waste side of the lines. A few extra cuts to help the waste leave the area.

Dry fit took a bit...involved a mallet. to both assemble and disassemble....yep, was a bit..tight.
473207
Corner #2 is on the left...

Once I had things together, and square (for now) I could mark the plywood panel for length....then the Stanley No. 358 could make the square cut..check for fit?
473208
I'll mark for width later, once the front of the box is done.
Task #2 is done....Task #3? Weeeellll..
473209
Brain Pharts...trying to figure out the cuts needed...and still cover the groove...then started tails first....stopped there. Relaid for Pins first...to at least match the already laid out tails.
Below this 2" wide board will be a drawer. Plywood panel gets tucked up into a rebate on the inside of this skinny board. Would be nice NOT to see any grooves. No square holes that would need filling.

Leg was starting to cramp between the back of the knee and the hip...about a baseball sized one, at that. Time to just stop here, and try again tomorrow....

Stay tuned...:D

02-05-2022, 6:07 PM
Ok, corrected that mistake...pins first...
473254
Then the tails to match..
473255
Then a dry fit..so I can cut the plywood to fit..
473256
Then repeat for the other end....
473257
Transfer the lines across...saw and chop
473258
Then see how this all fits together...
473259
Needed to plane that ragged edge a bit...was holding the one corner up a hair...

Then clamps, glue and a brush to smear the glue around..
473260
Including c clamps to hold the plywood into the bed of glue along that rebate...

Let this sit a day....stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-06-2022, 9:46 AM
Maybe after Lunch. I'll get those clamps off....and continue with Episode #2...
473297
Need my bench vise back, anyway....

Stay tuned....film at 2300 hrs...

steven c newman
02-06-2022, 3:31 PM
Ok..clamps came off slowly..
473344
Then the usual cleaning up began...even some detail work,,,
473345
Leveled the edge...then see how this will fit onto the bottom panel..
473346
According to Sellers, the edges of the bottom panel get a rounding over..with a plane, of course....starting with the end grain..
473347
Then do the long grain edges..
473348

Check how it fits..
473349
Then a small bead of glue, and 7 clamps..
473353

After looking the panel for the lid over..
473355
Determined that is was too narrow..we have ways...

Crosscut and ripped a close match, then glued that to the matching grain. Will let both of these glue-ups sit a day

Figured that was enough, for today's shoptime...

Stay tuned..:D

Box came out of the clamps, today. Needed the bench space...first was the old Monarch Metal Vise was needed to fix the hinges...from too gappy..
473430
To "no gappy"...
473431
Toss these two into the box, for now...needed a plane set up..
473432
As the lid gets a shallow rebate all the way around the underside..BEFORE any round-overs can happen.

Next...lid came out of it's clamps...needed a glue line to disappear...
473433
Do both faces....best looking of the two will be the outside of the lid...

Laid it out for width, cut that...that see how it sits..
473434
Same overhang all the way around. Then dug out some scraps...
473435
These will get milled into a drawer....

Stay tuned...:D

Ok, need to go and finish up the tasks in Episode #2 and #3....today. Waiting on Lunch to settle through. Film at 2300 hrs....I hope.

Tasks for today:

Establish the "field" on the underside of the lid.

Round over the edges of the lid

Lay out for the hinges in the lid, and install the hinges

Use the hinges to lay out the location on the box, and install the hinges to the box

Last part of Episode #3: Install the "floor" of the compartment.....already done, my version....plywood, not solid wood.

Might take an afternoon to do...we'll see

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
02-08-2022, 5:21 PM
Ok..Rebates are done..
473500
Round overs are done...
473501
Hinges are installed in the lid..
473502
Then used to lay out the hinge mortises on the box, and install the lid to the box..
473503
Close the lid, check for any gaps...
473504

Found none. Can now rough cut some parts to build the drawer...
473505

2-1/2 hours in the shop, today.....kind of sore, right now....think the drawer will have to wait a day..

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-09-2022, 12:21 PM
Well, just got done watching the Episode #4......Sellers doing the dovetails for the drawer. Hmmm...well, first a trip to Krogers for the Boss....then we'll see....Might even do tails first, this time..for the 1/2 lap front corners....the back? We'll see.....Sellers uses slips for the bottoms...I use a groove to house mine. This MIGHT get "Very Interesting" to quote Arte Johnson.....

steven c newman
02-09-2022, 7:24 PM
The plan for today..
473560
Involved connecting the sides to the front of the drawer, with half blind dovetails...
First was to get the parts to the right sizes. His drawer is 1-1/2", mine is 2" deep/tall...
473561
Sides needed to allow for the front of the drawer...so...

There needs to be a shallow rebate milled on the ends of the sides, then tails were laid out. Then sawn, then chopped, then pared...then used to lay out the pins..
473563
Then the sawing, chopping and paring work...until a dry fit, Corner #1..
473564
LOTS of chisels in use, lots of cussing to help out....then repeat for the second corner..
473565
At least I get better as I go along....last time I made half blind dovetails....involved a router table...
Did I mention chisels?
473566
Ok, at this point in the Sellers Video, he stopped. So, the way my back was hurting, right between the shoulder blades...figured I would do the same.

I can try again tomorrow, to through dovetail the back to the sides?
473567
And maybe plough the grooves to house that plywood bottom panel?

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
02-10-2022, 4:56 PM
2-1/4 hours in the shop, today...area between the shoulder blades is hurting, again....the extra 15 minutes was more for camera work, than woodworking.....Decided to dry fit the 2 sides and the drawer front, and see how it looks in the box..473620
Was afraid to push it too far in....might not get the drawer back out:rolleyes:
473621
And a front view. Have a couple wooden knob options...either a single one, or, a pair?
Time to lay out some pins...first....
473622
Might just have enough tools for this job?

Stay tuned

steven c newman
02-10-2022, 5:06 PM
Ok..some saw work was in order..
473623
Then chop about halfway..
473624
Then flip over, and complete the chop
473625
Then clean up the chops...
473626
Use these pins to layout the tails....saw, chop, pare dry fit...
473627
Repeat for the last corner..
473628

Time to do the grooves....was unable to jig a way to hold the short end pieces still for the Stanley 45 to cut a groove...we have other ways..
473629
The test the plywood bottom panel for a fit.....width was fine...however, length was NOT....a lot of nibble, check, nibble, cuss, check..Finally!
473630

might as well glue this together..
Stay tuned....

steven c newman
02-10-2022, 5:11 PM
And a forest of clamps shows up....
473631
Will let this mess sit overnight...and see how it looks in the morning.

I'm pooped....back is sore, had computer issues trying to process these photos.....

Stay tuned....:D

steven c newman
02-11-2022, 5:27 PM
Clamps removed...found an issue..
473689
Or, rather 2 issues. Back of the drawer has holes. Had some Rosewood scrap, and made two plugs...
473690
Problem solved. Front got planed smooth. Ends weren't too hateful..
473691
Question was whether 2 knobs were too much..
473692
or just one..
473693
Hmmm, decided one will be enough..cordless drill..
473694
Then a dab og glue and a clamp...
473695
Let this sit a bit....then 1st coat of Amber Shellac..
473696

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-11-2022, 6:45 PM
While waiting....a look around?
473699
The other end of the box...and
473700
Hinge side..and..
473701
A look at the front...have been letting this sit all opened up..
473702
Don't want anything to get stuck...now do we...

Will add a second coat after a bit....Was still a bit sticky..

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
02-12-2022, 12:08 PM
Have rubbed the box and drawer down a second time, with 0000 steel wool, AND a clean rag....not a real glossy finish...should be good enough to sit around in the shop.

Film when I can get it processed....

Stay tuned

steven c newman
02-12-2022, 2:41 PM
Ok..
473781
Front view..
473782
Open the drawer..
473783
Open the lid...
473784
Top of the lid...
473785
End details..
473786
Underside of the box..
473787
Other end of the box....

About 2 weeks to do....must be getting slow in me old age...

Thanks for looking in, from time to time..

steven c newman
02-13-2022, 11:34 AM
Box will be staying in the shop. Once a spot is cleared out for it at the "East End" of the bench.....all the pencils and other small layout tools will be headed there, as well.

Drawer will hold all the small hardware parts.....and a couple tools to install them with...

Just have to clean this spot out...
473820
This MIGHT take a while to do....
