Over the past 15 years the shop has seen two additions, four DC renovations, three counter and shelving make overs, each time getting a little better.

I generally take two weeks every Christmas and work on the shop trying to make it a more organized place to work. Pine where I live is very cheap so I set out to cover the drywall with Pine as I find it has many advantages.

If you were to walk in the shop and look towards the left; (I refer to this as the main shop) The counter tops are done with maple hadwrood floor laminate, I like this as I can replace a strip if necessary however it is very durable. I use two miter saws as my primary hobby business is picture framing.

This is the same wall looking 180 degrees towards the front of the shop....daughters bed is under construction and lying against the window:rolleyes:

This is to the right as you walk in the door and see's the most activity as I put my frames together in this area.

This would be to the left of the area you were just looking at.

If you were to walk in the door and look to your immediate left, this is one of my heat sources, a pellet stove, awsome unit all thermostat controlled and programmed to heat the shop before I arrive home.

http://www.picframer.ca/8s.jpg

This is what I refer to as my middle shop.....the only pic I have without it full of "stuff"

http://www.picframer.ca/1955.jpg

From the middle sop there is a roof to the left where I keep my cyclone, to the left of the cyclone (no pics) is a room 16 X 14 where I store my wood.

It was a great fall for the shop when it comes to new tools, Dewalt's factory centre here had a big sale so I bought a new 16 1/2" drill press and a new DW788 scroll saw, then for Christmas the office bought me a new General 350, 5 h.p. cabinetsaw, not sure I like that much power but it's a great saw.

Thanks for looking!

Andy

That's one purty shop. Are you sure somebody works out there. LOL. I would be scared to get it dirty. All kidding aside i like the pine look on the walls and ceiling, that just gave me some ideals on what to do to mine. I've got a 24 by 32 garage that does not see any cars that i use. Thanks for the tour.

Andy,

Very nice looking shop. I really like the pine on the walls and the ceiling. I wish my shop could stay that clean. Good luck with the picture framing business and your daughters bed.

That shop just looks warm. Considering where you live, that must be a trick. The thought you put into your reorganizations really shows. Everything looks to be handy but out of the way. I'd never heard of that laminate floor benchtop idea before. I can see where that would really hold up. I may have to borrow that idea in the future. Nice shop.

Gosh, I forgot one whole wall:eek:

If you were to walk in the front door and look towards the back of the main shop, this is the wall.....I also have a wood burning stove that I use to burn scrap and the never ending pile of softwood left from a Hurricane two years ago.

Great lookin' place Andy. I love the pine. We've got a pretty cheap supply here in northern Michigan also. I'm using a lot of it. Sure hope it's looks as good as yours.

Andy - You've done a great job with the shop. I'm envious.

Quick question - In photo #4 there is a small benchtop machine just to the right of the window. What might that be?

Andy,

That pine looks great, but be careful of those saw blades! you don't want to knock one of those off!

Great shop, nice drill press too.

What a great spot you've got there Andy...I love the wood walls and ceiling. Even though I understand the light benefits of using white paint, the wood really makes it look cozy and inviting. Hope you enjoy it...it looks great!

That is a thumb nail jointer, while it is sold and carries the name of C & H (this is kind of the Feestool in the picture framing world) it's actually made by Porter Cable. What it does is cut a key in the backs of my miters and then I pound a fiberglass key in. An underpinner will not work with the majority of the frames we use and I make a little over 1,200 a year, all custom and mainly for artists in 76 species of wood at the moment.

My son also workes with me and has his own wall of tools, he does mainly turning and sold over 365 pieces last year. Safety Equipment removed for the image as per his request:rolleyes:

While I could, a 6' piece of T & G, V groove pine here is only just over ninety cents each. Red pine is dirt cheap here as they had and are still cutting something like 20 square miles of it due to a beetle. I have seen it for twenty cents a board foot but it's not great for furniture as it never seems to stop bleeding.

I lost a couple on my property during a hurricane that are close to 60 feet long and three feet on the butt however they are near the back of my four acre property and I can't get to them with the tractor.

This is what we refer to as Jack or white pine.

There is a place here called Canadian Tire, they sell everything. I bought some really neat, various sized, L shaped screw hooks with a nice course thread that are rubber coated....I think they frigged up on the price as I bought a couple hundred for ten cents each. Anyhow they ensure things like blades etc can't fall due to vibration etc.

Andy,

That is a beautiful shop. So warm and inviting and just makes you want to spend a lot of time in there. The words quality and organization are written all over the place.

Thanks for sharing those fantastic pictures with us. I see a lot of ideas in there that will serve as inspiration to many of us.

Hi Andy,

thanks for this great shop tour.
I bet you enjoy working in such a warm and cosy atmosphere and I envy you the “pine walls”.
I guess you’ll paint the ceiling during your next Christmas holidays.:D

Great shop Andy! Thanks for taking the time to put together the tour. Do you happen to have a floor plan that you could add to this thread? I find that one really helps me to put all the pictures into context.

inkthat my shop with a wood fire looks cozy. But, with your pine walls, as oposed to my white plywood walls, your place certainly beets mine out for cozyness.

Well up until I started the reno, this is what the floor plan was. I started to re-do a what is where today at the office but gave up....When things quiet down I need to take the time and redraw with some hyper links to specific tool areas so that if someone see's something they like it will be easier to copy it if they wish.

Very nice set-up there, Andy. You have a right to be proud of it. I was going to accuse you of keeping it too clean, but you redeemed yourself with the pic of your son covered in chips. At least we know somebody uses the shop. ;)

Andy, where is the lathe in that layout? I'm missing it for some reason... ;)

It's in the middle shop which is a disaster at the moment. I didn't get the carport built onto the shop last fall....too busy...then I bought a small refer in New Brunswick that was full of Burls from an estate. I didn't have anywhere to put them as everything down here is full at the moment so we piled about a hundred in that middle room.....if one were to dig, the lathe is there<G> The rest are still in New Brunswick, kind of a shame as the old guy didn't seal them and the majority have cracks. I have been using some small pieces for flat work to get my investment back, sold 80 of these at Christmas before I came down with phenlmia.

Seth is busy with flat work projects so we haven't bothered digging it out, spring project<G>

Great job on your shop Andy. I wish my shop had that much space. You sure put the "wood" in wood shop, looks much nicer than block or drywall.
