It has been a few months since I have turned anything. Senile lethargy I guess. I had a
piece of red oak on the shed floor so I decided to turn a natural edged bowl. Got the pilot hole for the screw chuck crooked and shelved the idea. Cut the natural edge part off and had a much smaller blank. I rough turned the resulting blank for the DNA bath and made it a half inch thick. WRONG, DON!!!!! Should have followed BG’s advice to make the rim thicker. The rough bowl warped too much to make the nice curve I had planned for the sides. I did the best I could with what was there and this is the mangy result. Of course it had to happen with the nicest piece of wood I have had since Carole sent me the box elder blank. Grrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

I don't like oak, but this piece works for me! Sure is busy little bugger.

Don,

From the pictures, I fail to see anything wrong with that bowl other than it being just plain TOOOOO pretty :D Man... that is some fantastic wood for sure.

But I love the grain pattern though...Nice work Don, even if it is a "screwup", I am sure someone will buy it.

Don,
Looks to me like you snatched victory from the jaws (sorry) of defeat! Original intent aside, good lookin' bowl, nice job.

Don, that is a good lookn' bowl and all you did was follow the woods lead. That is exactly the way it wanted to look!

Don, I think that is a lovely piece of oak, a lot more interesting than most pieces I have turned. I like it!:D

Looked, looked again, and one more time. I can't see anything wrong with that bowl. In fact, its one of the best looking oak bowls I've seen. I have one in the finish stage now that is almost the identical shape but not nearly as pretty of wood.

Man don't beat yourself up. That is a nice looking bowl. I think we can be our own worst enemy some times when we are looking for perfection all the time. The fact that you where able to salvage it is a big plus on your card. I think it looks great. I do a lot of work with ok and you did a great a job!

Nice bowl, Don - I like it. The Oak sure shows plenty of grain.

Thanks for the pictures!

Don,

I really like the bowl! However, I think what you and Glen have posted today really illustrates to me what a "great" turner is versus a beginner like me. When I first started developing my flat work skills a mentor once told me that the difference between a great wood worker and the rest was their ability to make their mistakes either look like they were a design element of the piece or make them disappear. I think you did that.
