One of my (awesome) customers just sent me a quick video of hoisting his new A3-41 off the pallet and onto a PM3500 dolly with a cherry picker and engine leveling bracket. I believe you can rent these cheaply at Autozone, etc. Many of us have done dirtier versions of the same and it's always scary the first time, so wanted to share. Could be applied to any model of jointer/planer.

If you can rent one the OTC floor crane is nice because the legs can be spread wide to straddle the mobile base. I just came in from the shop after hoisting my mill/drill up onto the table. weight is 440 or 660 pounds. Engine hoist to lift it into pickup and a lever hoist on a I beam bolted to the rafters to lift it here.
My I beam support is a ten foot 2x8 spanning four roof trusses on top of the lower cross piece. I drilled two holes. every two feet in the 2x8 and matching holes in one flange. Bolts up from the beam then nuts above the 2x10. No creaking or noise at all during the lift.

Otc floor crane looks like all the others but the legs pivot side to side and up/down for storage. Weighs double the horrible fright version for the same rating but easier to move with bigger wheels.

How do you retrieve the lifting straps when the machine is dropped into the cradle?

The lifting straps go in the well under the jointer/planer. I used an engine hoist to take my a3-31 off the pallet and onto the Portamate 3500.
