For my next trip to Europe I want to try using a VPN for security when accessing the internet. Most hotels, apartments, and B&Bs have WiFi but with unknown security. The trip is planned to Italy in '22.

I haven't used VPN since accessing my employer's network from my home studio before I retired. That was over 15 years ago and the IT department set it up.

From reading reviews and such I found a number of options, each claiming to be the best. Experience of real users is more useful. For those recent or current VPN experience from overseas, which do you recommend and why? I need the ability to use it from Italy from at least an iPad, perhaps another device. I am willing to pay for a subscription.

Thanks for any advice.

I don't have a ton of experience with VPN's but I use https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ and it's been pretty stable for me and will work on ipads.

Do you know if it will work reliably from Italy. Their web indicates "Million satisfied customers worldwide" but I can't find any specific country information.

When I search Google for VPN related to Italy I get a variety of responses. Tom's Guide recommends Express, Nord, and Surfshark. Another review site suggests those plus IPVanish and CyberGhost.I don't necessarily need to be anonymous but when I contact accounts in the US I want to protect my usernames and passwords. Will nearly any VPN work for this?

I haven't been overseas but I use Nord VPN and have been very satisfied with it.... here is a rating for vpn's in Italy https://www.comparitech.com/blog/vpn-privacy/best-vpn-italy/ Haven't checked the subscription rates lately but it's usually around $100 for 3 years....

I just checked private internet access will work in Italy. Having said that I know people who use Nord VPN and like so I recomend either of those two.

If by chance you are using a travel agent, or it's a tour with one of the better companies, they may be able to provide that info.

No, we use no agents nor book tours. My wife is better than any travel agent for booking and ferreting out deals. We sometimes stay with friends who know more than any agent about where to go and what to see. The WiFi is safe with them but I don't trust that in rented accommodations.

Thanks, that was one of several web sites I studied. I also check with some friends who travel there.

I use PIA as well. They're one of the lowest cost providers that I know of and the speed seems fine for what I use it for e.g. no video streaming to speak of.
