I just finished this blanket chest made of solid cherry. I still need to buff it out with 0000 steel wool but won't do it for another week to let it cure. I used raised panel construction because I didn't have enough cherry long enough to do it differently. But I thought it came out ok. Used BLO, shelac then waterlox for the finish. thanks for looking.

Your design may have been limited by your stock length but I think you now have a very unique looking chest. I can't think of another chest I've seen with a raised panel top.

Rick,

The raised panels really give it a distinctive look, plus the color of the cherry is just great.

The raised panels may have out of necessity, but if you hadn't said so everyone would think your idea unique and beautiful anyway.
Absolutly goergous!

37.5" long 24.5" high and 19.75" deep. The top has a .75" lip all around except the back, which is flush. I used no-mortise hindges for Lee Valley.

That is a wonderful piece of work! Did you put an aromatic cedar inside? Thanks for the post.

Hi Rick,
You did a beautiful job on the whole chest. I read what you said is your finish but I am wondering how you controled the blotching that usually occurs with cherry. Could you explain a bit more about your finishing technique and how you kept the blotching from occuring. Thanks, Pete

Thanks for the nice comments. To control blotching I first put on a wash coat of 1/2# to 1# cut shelac then lightly sand with 400 grit then put BLO on. Then seal coat with 2# cut shelac after I have left the BLO cure for 5-7 days. Then top coat with varnish. The wash coat with very thin shelac then sanded really helps control the bloching.

Beautiful chest Rick! The finish is superb, and cherry is my favorite. If my wife sees it I know she will want one as two of our closests are stacked with blankets!:)

Must say that is a very well done piece. I like the rp lid and I couldn't see anything at all wrong with panels on the front and end anyway. Well done. Like Dennis I'm glad to see another arkie on the board. Welcome, chime in often.

Really great looking job.

Just curious, what did you do on the inside? Is it finished too? With what. Did you glue in some aromatic cedar?

I put a shelac finish on the inside, no varnish. Glued the cedar to birch ply substrate (cedar is 1/16" thick). Then put the cedar in a rabbit on the bottom.
