This looks good https://www.jlconline.com/tools/hand-tools/thingamejig-scribing-tool_o

I made a simple version that lacks height adjustability. I may replace it with a thinner version that has the knife blade carpet taped to a block.468075

I used to use a compass, then this Accuscribe device https://www.woodworkerexpress.com/scribing-tool-4-1-2.html?y=US&msclkid=ca4db2050d3413727361d38bfc7c1bdb&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=**LP%20-%20Shop%20-%20Tools%20%26%20Woodworking%20Essentials%20-%20Hand%20Tools&utm_term=4580015687999658&utm_content=10102614%7CPCAS4%7CAccuscribe%7CTools% 20and%20Woodworking%20Essentials%7CCompass%20and%2 0Scribes%7CPractical%20Products%7C%2412.49
which stays flat on the work but the adjustments don't hold well.

I much prefer to knife rather than pencil the scribe line on blue tape as that gives me a sharp easily followed cut line and the tape protects the finish.

I've been using an Accuscribe Pro for about 10 years now and like it a lot.

I'll throw this thing in the hat.
When I first got one I thought it was a stocking stuffer toy. But damn if I don't find myself reaching for it all the time. I got mine from Lee Valley for about $10. Might not work for all conditions, but if you're scribing off a flat surface it should be good.

I put some masking tape on the side that touches the wall to avoid any marks on the paint

Never had an issue. I let the compass float along, no pressure on the wall.
