I've been following some of these projects for a while now, and it's delightful to see them starting to come to fruition.

I read an article about that while back...some fine engineering going on there and great use of a natural, renewable (with good conservation) mataerial.

A decent sized office building was built in Minneapolis out of wood about five or six years ago. Nowhere near 20 stories though. It seems like this type of construction is better for the environment. The manufacturing of cement to make concrete is a huge consumer of energy.

There is a 40 story tower under development in Vancouver BC that is designed as a wood structure. They're using interesting engineered components, Cross Lam timber, Dowel Lam timber and of course the traditional Glue Lam.
The interiors are showcasing a lot more wood also. I've heard some of these materials are actually more fire resistant than the structural components we have come to think of as non-combustible.

At a fundamental level, (to this non-engineer) wood should generally not have the compressive or tensile strength of steel and concrete, so it must be sophisticated engineering techniques that are being utilized.
