I returned to SD and visited a bridge I had crossed the Cheyenne River on many times. We would drive 70+ miles. on a gravel road, to my uncle's ranch to hunt and visit.
The ranch is now owned by others and the buildings are all but gone but not in my mind.

That's quite a the bridge structure...and a great photo of it, too.

It's good that despite things always changing over time, we can still visualize the way a place impacted us in an earlier time. Two of my cousins vacationed last week on the lake that our shared grandmother owned a house on for many years. They did manage to be allowed on that property for a few minutes to reminisce and the selfie they took with the lake side of the house in the image really brought back a lot of memories!

My father worked on, died on and chased oil rigs around the country. I grew up in a lot of seldom heard of towns in WY, CO, UT, southern IL and southern IN. I have revisited a lot of those towns as an adult. Some of the houses in which we lived still exist, some don't, some look better all these decades later, some have degraded dramatically.

I have come to the conclusion that there is only 2 things guaranteed in life.....death and change.

Just for kicks, I looked up several old child hood places on google maps and found in pictures that more of them are still standing. Perhaps not in their past glory, but still there. My grades 1 to 3 elementary school is now a municipal maintenance building. The houses are still there. A cabin my dad built in the 1940's, where we spent many weekends is gone. Relatives still own the property and saved a couple pictures from just before it burned. Some of the places where I hunted with my father are now just suburban sprawl. Tract housing for miles in every direction. Strip shopping centers, etc.

This one near me built in 1863 by U.S. Grant, yes that Grant. that timeline seems unlikely to me. used for a highway until 1981.

My brother got out of his cell phone plan by dying. It did not work at his new house, no mailing address for the company, phone number only. They finally mailed a big bill months after the estate was settled. Never did find his phone. The battery was dead by the time he was found by the mailman.
