This is the first in the Thundercat series from the spalted maple burl you brought when you came over. It is about 6 1/2" x 5 1/14" with an ebonized Holly collar. Finish is 2 coats of Waterlox, but it will get one more then a buffing. ( HAd to take the pic while I was thinking about it) It has taken me this long to get up the nerve to put some of that wood on the lathe for fear I would screw it up! :o I still am thinkng about the big one with the Thundecat face on it. I want to keep the figure which means a large form, so it will have to be a large piece and will probably have to wait until I can afford a hollowing rig or at least the large Keltons. Thanks again!:D

Carole,

I’ve been patiently waiting to see what you’d do with it. In fact I was about to drive over there and find out what the hold up was:) I have to say the wait was well worth it though, it turned out awesome! That spalted maple burl is some of the best I’ve ever seen. The spalting was caught at just the right time and the gain is spectacular. I’m just glad we gave it to someone with such talent who could do it justice. Now get to that big piece!

Mike

P.S. you might want to consider keeping your doors locked… I’d hate to see some "burglar" make off with it.:D :D :D

Mike,
Don’t worry, she’s guarding it with her life… I already tried to get it.

John, none of us may ever get "there"! I'm not anywhere NEAR "there"! This piece is not perfect. There are a couple of small but deep CAed cracks that were there when I started it. The wood was a little weak from the spalting and during the hollowing process I could feel, but not see, tiny little invisible cracks forming all around. As you guys know, this is an indication of impending disaster. I wrapped the piece with shrinkwrap, but I could tell by the sound that it was getting weaker with each pass, so hollowing was halted at about 3/8" wall thickness. I don't like that. A form like this should be light and this one feels heavy for it's size. At least to me, it does. So, you see, a photograph does not tell all! I was doing this piece for a wedding present, but because of that wall thickness it will never leave my shop.

Incredible! I'm sitting here thinking, "I can get there, I can get there, I can get there, yeah right" and you're not going to let it leave your shop because...?!?

Oh, I'm still going to try to get there.

Carole,
Just as I suspected it sounds like a dangerous piece of wood... for your own piece of mind (and safety) I suggest you return it immediately so I can dispose of it properly:D :D :D

Mike

Carole, you started out with an outstanding piece of wood, you used your expertese to make a work of art. The lines, the shoulder, the small foot, all add up to a collection called perfection in wood. Thanks for showing us this beautiful hollowform.
