Steering wheel repair

A friend brought over the steering wheel from this for repair:

He is very big on retaining the patina, so I was going to use hide glue so I can wipe off the excess with a wet rag, but then got to thinking that if he parked it facing the sun it's gonna get pretty hot and I'm not sure how this will affect the hide glue. I've cleaned the old glue up and I can squeeze it together without clamps. Epoxy? Yellow glue? There is also a flake that needs to be glued back as well, and will require clamping.

Well, good thinking. But then if you recall that hide glue was once the only option and plenty of objects survived sun baking you should be alright. It may have been made that way originally. The few old joints I ever disassembled took lots of hot water, not just heat.

Both yellow glue and epoxy soften at a lower temperature than hide glue, so hide glue will be the better choice. Here's an example of a test. (http://www.frets.com/FretsPages/Luthier/Data/Materials/GlueTest/gluetest.html)

I would use epoxy. Then you won’t have to worry about sun and water.

From what I've known, hide glue will be fine, as it requires hot water or steam to disassemble, not just heat.

Thx for the comments folks - I think I'll stick with the hide glue.

I set the temp to 140 and it varied from 138 to 142 over the course of the day.
