Here is a maple burl platter that I also finished up today. It was really punky and was difficult to turn in one piece. It finished up at 10" x 1-7/8" and has a Watco soak and beall buffed with wax only.

I still a bunch of blanks of this stuff and each one is a little worse the one before.:( And they get smaller.

Thanks for looking.

Another winner, Dick:) . Were you able to use the vacuum chuck to do the bottom?

Thanks Keith and Bernie,

Ya Keith, I had to close it off to get enough vacuum to hold it, but it worked great. Just used a little blue tape.;)

Hi Dick,
Really nice platter. I have a hunk of that type of maple, also quite punky. It's in a rough bowl form, 16" x 4" since this past fall, should be dry by spring. I am going to try and stabilize it with 50-50 poly and acetone in a vacuum tank.

I've have good luck with a roll of stretch wrap from the kitchen to seal leaks

Good save. It has an interesting look to it with all the voids, etc.

Definitely an ART piece. Should fetch a GOOD price!

Nice work Dick! I see Patience written all over that one!! I was looking at some punky cherry logs the other day and said, "Nahhh". Maybe I should go back and pick them up.

Looks good Dick. I like the form.

Hey, if you were to stabilize it somewhat like Bill wrote of, would it take the white part out... or is that just the flash in the picture? Just wondering.

Good job on what looks like a tough piece of wood, Dick!

Thanks for the pictures!

Thanks everyone.

Ernie the white wood is the punky wood that is just falling off this piece. It sat around too long before I got it.:(
