Previous post about how to flush cut an existing deck board reminded me of how I rounded over the corners on some 4x4's. I wanted the round over to end about one inch from one end to match a cap. ten foot beam was too big for the shaper and a clamp on the fence so...
I used the router to round over to a mark on one post's long corner. Then I lay the post perpendicular to the side of my house on the patio. With the router off I pulled the post away from the house so the router hit the house siding at the correct distance. I filled the gap between the house and the end of the post with a 2x3 and a 1x4 and some extras. Then I did each corner of each post spacing it off the house using the shim set. Simply run the router down the post until it hit the house and I knew the distance was correct.
This would be an easy way to make stopped dadoes along the faces. The posts weight was enough to keep it from moving out of adjustment.
