January 2nd 2006. Enjoying some vacation days I had time to press ahead on my workbench project. In need of some lag bolts I visited the local farm equipment dealer. Virtually he has everything!
And then it happened! In a dark corner on a shelf sat a wooden plane. Interesting! And what´s that, there are more planes! Six in total. Apparently leftovers, several decades old. All with a sign "Original Steiner Hobel". That company went out of the plane business at least 30 years ago.
I asked the shop owner if he knows something about these planes. He looked astonished. It seems these parts fell into oblivion long ago even if they had Euro price tags. Someone must have converted prices 4 years ago! Next question was about price. The tags said 345 Euro in total. But as one might assume, the planes were dusty and stained.
The owner told me that he have to think about this and asked me to come back some days later. I did! And now I´m the owner of six Steiner planes, made in Germany. Chances are these are from the 1960-ies. He asked for 125 Euro and I think thats more than ok.
The whole bunch:

A pretty good start into a new year, isn`t it! :)
Ok, these planes need some replenishing, at least grinding and honing of the irons. And I need to earn some experience with wooden planes! Until now I owned only metal planes.
