Barn Sale today....best 2 words I ever hear.....and...
458942
2 different sales....hammer from an Estate Sale...$1.....the Jack and the mortise gauge were a package deal, for $10.....Points on the gauge are still sharp..DAMHIKT
However, it was a bit on the Krusty side...
458943
Yeah.....so, hauled it down to the shop...for a bit of a clean up...
458944
Watch this space....:D
458945
Took it all apart....sanded the wood (Rosewood?) smooth...shined the brass fittings up.....the threaded adjuster got it's threads cleaned up, and oiled...
458946
Not sure which maker used this style of brass slides...
458947
Apparently, they also used steel rivets to hold the head in one piece....
458948
All cleaned up, and ready for work.....not too bad for "Free" is it?

Ok, that Jack plane was next...Missing a lateral lever ( not that big of a deal) Had the wrong chipbreaker ( a #3 sized one, replaced with a #4 sized one, with the bolt) Replaced the brazed back together lever cap with one that wasn't..
459041
Under the frog was a nasty mess.
459042
Frog needed a good cleaning. At least the bolts came out easy enough...except for the one in the clip....decided to leave that one alone..
459043
A crack turned out to be a clean break...cleaned off the old, dried glue to bare wood...reglued
459045
This took about.....10 minutes to do....about the same about of time I spent on the iron's back.....another 10 to sharpen.
459046
Replace the bolts with more correct, for a Type 12, tops, and the short rod. Gave the black areas a spritz of gloss black....put things back together..
459047
And set up a test track..
459048
Mr. Barnes' old Jack plane is now back in service...

At one time, this was a Stanley No. 5, Type 12. Seen a rough life out on the farm. :(

Was a busy weekend of sales....more trophies to show....stay tuned...:D

Some of the other "Trophies"....
459106
$1 LED Flashlight, needed 2 C Batteries
459107
$1 Octagonal Handled hammer, will need new wedges...
459108
3 SMALL knives, almost need the Magnifying Glass to see them...$0.15 a piece on the knives...yes, that is a Case Knife, all 2-5/8" long handle of one..
459109
$4.45 for a WEN No. 930 Power Plane
459110
Seems to be all there, even runs...
459111
Sanding/Sharpening Center needed an overhead spot light. $1 Yankee screwdriver bits @ $0.50 each....and two LONG Irwin screwdrivers, @ $0.50 each
459112
$1 for the 2" wide Stanley chipbreaker and bolt...passed on the bent (BADLY) iron with it. Iron in the photo is from the$10 Jack plane. Lever cap is from the "spares" box in my shop...to replace the Brazed back together one the Jack plane came with.

No picture, but..a 6" Buffer/Polisher...$5....

Not too bad of a weekend? Will have to see how sharp the WEN knives are...looking for any chips....may have to go out any find a manual for it, too..

I had no idea WEN was around long enough to have old looking tools

Ok..that $1 hammer...
459288
That had 3 ring-shank nails as a wedge....
459289
I spent $2.99 counting sales tax to rehab the hammer..
459290
Both a wooden and a steel wedge were installed, and ground down flush. Rust was wire wheeled off, at least the areas I could get to..
459291
Handle did have a deep nick or two....gave the handle a wrap, to improve the grip.

Haven't found a maker's name...might be from Plumb?

These kinds of posts are encouraging to me.
