I made this potting gardening bench for the wife from scrap 2 x 6 panels laying around. I’d like to put two drawers in the front. The left right and back apron is 1x5 (.75x4.5 actually).

Best and easiest way to put drawers in this thing?

I figured I would come in about 8 inches on the left and right and add Front to back support and in order to attach some kind of drawer glide. I’d also need a center support for the other side of the drawer glides to attach to also.

I think I'd start by looking at drawer glides that attach to the top rather than sides, like for a keyboard drawer.

Otherwise just screw some 1x4's through the top for side mount slides.

I would probably use pocket screws or dominoes to attach the mounts to the top. That way there isn’t any penetration of the top. If you did that, I would use stainless steel screws.

I’d hesitate to use mechanical slides, given the grit from soil. Maybe bottom mount if you put another board across the bottom, though that’s another place for soil to build up.

Agree that slides are questionable. But for short drawers access to the back is poor. You could make a shelf and slide a couple of boxes on it. They can be pulled out and set on top for full access. And they can be cleaned out when stuff falls into them.
