To place between a couple of chairs. Something to sit my Guinness on. So, started in on a top for the table....slowly hauled three 1 x 6 x 4' Ash planks to the shop. Placed them on the cleaned off bench...
457526
Had set the worse of the 3 on top.....wanted about 30" good wood....Hmmm. One end..
457527
Will have to remove this section...down at the other end..
457528
Can't have that in a tabletop, either...set up a saw bench..
457529
Sorry, no tablesaw, today...doesn't take all that long, with a decent saw..
457531
Plus, no need to shoot every edge..
457532
When they are this well sawn.
457533
Splitting the lines, and watching the reflection in the saw plate...

One done, two more to do..
Stay tuned :D

steven c newman
05-13-2021, 4:35 PM
For the next 2...laid the first plank on top...
457534
Set #1 where the best of the board was....had to trim the ends, again...sometimes wasn't much needed to be sawn..
457535
More of a way to square up one end...was a bit rough...
457536
Edges had a bit of curve going on...Manage to get all 3 boards cut..
457537
Hmmmm...needs a bit of work done...before glue and clamps arrive....I ripped the worse bows off..
457538
Still need to run the jointer plane....10 pound limit ends this Saturday....then, maybe a #6 or a #7, to get these ready for some glue?

Legs: will do a glue up of 2 strips...watching how the grain goes...
Aprons: Full width of the 1 x 6....there MIGHT be a drawer involved on one end ( to hold coasters?)....

There will be pads added to the feet of the legs...to keep them high & dry.

After that...Depends on what I can come up with....bead work...tapered legs....we'll see..

Stay tuned..

1-1/2 hours of shop time, today. 10 pound weight limit ends Friday night.....means Saturday morning I can ease back into the shop...

Good for you Steven. Tom beat me to it in posting his observation. Glad to hear you are back on your feet and up and down the stairs, carrying lumber no less.

Was looking at which jointer plane to use,,,
457597
A Stanley No.7c might be a bit too big...
457598
The Millers Falls No. 15 seems to be about the right size...set up the first edge to be jointed..
457599
leg vise and a 6" f clamp....to hold things steady..
457600
Turn the board over/around, and do the other edge....not sure which will be IN the glue joint..yet..
457601
Hardest part, was getting a square edge....instead of beveled ones...
457602
Testing for a dry fit....square edge means things don't flop over. Laid the 3 boards out, looking for grain alignment
457603
Meh...could be better?.....
457604
Sometimes that "V" helps align during the glue ups....provided the operator bothers to look...

Trip to the ER this evening.....seems a headache had refused to go away....for almost a week...went to get it checked out, was there anyway, to get my blood thinner readings....

Will see what Saturday brings...
Stay tuned

Re-arrange a board or two...
457710
Clamps, glue, and cauls

457711
Pairs of cauls....
457712
And let sit a day...or 2....

Then set aside, and start work on 4 legs.
Stay tuned..

I am glad to see the Dungeon is back in operation.

steven c newman
05-17-2021, 7:03 PM
Most of the clamps were removed....and the panel for the top was set aside, for now...
457784
Leave the cauls in place, for now. Needed to cut another plank for lengths...
457785
2 crosscuts with the Disston D-112.....reset the rip fence..
457786
Distance being a hair over what 2 thicknesses of the plank would be....and run all 3 blanks through. Then pick the best 8 out of the 9 pieces.....#9 may wind up as a bread board end?
457787
Select 2 that will match, big bead of glue, and a few clamps...set aside...and do the other 3 blanks..
457788
And let these sit a spell......will come back once the glue is dry, lay out and taper 2 faces. Need to install the brand new 1/4" bandsaw blade, too. Plan is to rough saw the tapers, then plane them smooth....

Stay tuned...am even working on a Monday

That "taking it easy" didn't last long.

It almost felt like....

Need to take it easy.... and now time to build a chair...

Watch out if he chooses to work hard! :D

Steve, I think that you do not know how to take it easy. I might need to come out and relieve you of those really big hand planes of yours! <see Steve flattening a board with a block plane>

Making good progress!

steven c newman
05-18-2021, 12:19 PM
Bandsaw to rough a line...
457832
457833
Then clamp the blank to the bench, and get out 2 planes...
457834
And plane away the saw marks/burn marks...
457835
2 legs have both of their tapers done....need to finish the other 2 legs..
457836
Taper is to start just below the 5" width of the aprons....

Aprons will get started later today....need 2 sides, a back, and a drawer front.....drawer front and dividers will be from one board....so the grain will line up.

Stay tuned....

steven c newman
05-19-2021, 3:31 AM
Hauled a plank to the shop....wound up bringing a second one....Cross cut..
457864
to get a pair of long aprons. Also a short apron for the end.....and a blank for the drawer front...
457865
Made a set-up block... to mill the tenons.
457866
That will do for the main aprons....drawer front?
457867
It took a pair of rip cuts....will do the tenons later...
457868
Once I figure out what I need for a tenon.....and can cut the drawer front to size....

Set up to mill beads..
457869
Legs get a double bead down the outside corner....for now.....then the aprons get a bead along the bottom edge...
457870
Longer aprons also got face planed..
457871
tenons got cleaned up...
BRB..

steven c newman
05-19-2021, 3:40 AM
Tenons got cleaned up..
457872
Then the edge got a bead....
457873
The part below the drawer front, also gets a bead....
457874
Have to keep this lined up.....and see about tenons on the ends.
457875

Not sure IF I will build a drawer out of these leftovers....or just go out and buy a stick of Pine. Might be easier with the Pine.
457876
Those "T" marks show which face the tenons are supposed to get mortised to. Which will be the next step along the way...
Stay tuned :D

steven c newman
05-20-2021, 2:23 AM
Shop turned out to be a bit too warm, today....cut things short....
457970
Got this far....decided to stop....after getting a dry fit...
457971

It's a start, at least....will see how things go....Ash does NOT like being chopped.

steven c newman
05-20-2021, 5:15 PM
Was taking too long with just chisels....tenons are 3/8"...so...
458000
A 3/8" forstner bit was used....then I could clean things out with a chisel, or 3...
458001
The one in the middle is a 3/8" Witherby Mortise chisel....
458002
2nd mortise in half the time as the first one....was able to get most done this morning...
458003
Got to about this point....when a Migraine started in.....Momma Cat?
458004
And 3 out of the 4 kittens she has in my shop.....shop cats in training?

steven c newman
05-21-2021, 2:37 PM
Tenons above and below the drawer front.
458067
Need to chop matching mortises. Drawer sides were cut to length ( 28-1/2")
458068
Then ripped to match the depth of the drawer...
458069
And. a drawer back was roughed out..

458071
Have a use for the skinny parts..
458072
2 longer ones will be runners for the drawer to slide on....the shorter Pair.
458073
Get a 45 degree cut at both ends...to make corner blocks..
458074
To be glued and screwed into each corner...then a slotted hole is drilled, so I can attach the top to the table.

Once the shop cools back down....I'll see what I can get down...

steven c newman
05-23-2021, 9:35 AM
Mortises for the drawer opening...
458199
Were supposed to look like these 2.....however....top one is a wee too close to the top of the leg..
458200
But, since the blow-out will not be seen.....went ahead and did a glue-up...
458201
Then the other end..
458202
Then rushed around and glued both side aprons in place...
458203
And..even notched and glued the drawer runners in place..
458204
Only to find out, that one of the long sides was upside down.....bead was in the wrong edge.....hammer to knock things apart a bit, re-arrange things the way they are supposed to be....glue and clamps...

Corner blocks....got the last 2 cut, this morning...then counterbored and pilot hole drilled...
458205
Only to find out the screws would be a bit too LONG.....grinder to shorten, and repoint them.....waiting on the glue to dry, before I move things anymore....

Stay tuned:D

Steven,

Looks like great progress being made, and it looks like the table will turn out pretty nice.

Stew

steven c newman

Corner blocks are now installed.....glued and screwed in place ( first use of steel fasteners, so far)
458316
Drawer parts have been sized to fit...
458317
Will start on building the drawer after a while......after I work on the table's top, that is...

458318
Since Murphy's Law decreed that the top needed to be 3-1/2" wider. Monday was spent waiting on glue to cure..and Migraines to go away...will need to trim the ends for square, and then mill a tongue on each end to accept the bread board ends.....that I still have to mill.

THEN Drawer Building 101 can proceed.....I hope....trying to avoid the dreaded Honey-do Lists....

trying to avoid the dreaded Honey-do Lists....

If you got any strategies for that that actually work I am confident I am not the only married man here who is all ears.

"The table I am working on is the table you want for the gazebo" would get me zero traction if there was something else she wanted done sooner. It is looking to be a nice table when you get done for sure.

steven c newman
05-26-2021, 10:34 PM
Simple....process is called "Selective Hearing".......3 hours later.."Was there something you wanted done?" ( with any luck, she had already done it..)

Drawer Building 101....Dovetails.
458419
First is usually the worst...second corner was a tad bit better...
458420
Need grooves to hold the bottom in the drawer...
458421
Stanley #45, Type 20 was set up for that....1/4" wide, 3/8" deep grooves

Needed a dado on the end of the sides...set up the other Stanley 45 to mill a 3/4" wide x 3/8" deep dado..for the drawer's back to sit in...
458422
458423
Needed counter-sunk pilot holes to attach the back to the sides.....with glue and screws....used two "Vintage" drills..
458424
Corner is clipped, to make sitting the drawer into the opening a bit easier...
458425
Was getting "Photo Bombed" all day by the Shop Kitten....

Fought Father Murphy all afternoon......time for a Gin & Tonic....:D

steven c newman
05-26-2021, 10:47 PM
Yep, there be a Shop Kitten, at the moment...
458455
Mouthy thing, too.....had to watch where I stepped all day long...

458456
Drawer bottom gets glued and screwed into place.....back included.
458457
Still need to attach the handle to the drawer front....and give that Stanley No. 80 a run for it's money....will see if it is worth the $14 I spent on it...
458458
This thing...set it over on the Clothes Dryer, while I was working with the Stanley 45 Dado plane....turned my back, and the box "hopped" off the dryer, and landed lid first on the shop floor....dryer was NOT even running, yet. Will repair with a couple leather strap hinges...later.
458459
have to refine a couple thin drawer guides..ones I have are too thick....figure a few trips with a jack plane should cure that problem....also need to install the top to the base....

Stay tuned....:D

steven c newman
05-27-2021, 3:19 PM
Lets see how well the pictures load, today...was having "issues"last episode....
so...Guides for the drawer, were way too fat....Jumbo Jack to thin them down. Once thin enough....they were just glued into place..
458483
I also could clean up the drawer a bit, and install the handle..
458484
Which left the top of the table.....marked a curved line on the corners.....beltsand until the line is gone...
458485
Had a few rough and high spots to smooth out...
458486
Going with whichever face looks the best....that will be the show side....
458490
Also drilled a slot in each corner block...because once the slots are ready, and the base is centered onto the top..
458491
I can drive an 1-1/4" long screw centered in that slot, to attach the top to the base..
458492
Maybe this weekend, I can see about a finish?

Stay tuned:D

steven c newman
05-28-2021, 7:16 PM
Hey....Drawer fits!
458585
Had some spots to finish smoothing out..
458586
Legs were a bit rough...so got out the usual suspects..
458587
And got things ready for a coat of stain...
458588
letting this dry overnight....and see how it turns out....
458589
Minwax "Gunstock" is the flavour used.....
Just a simple table...
Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
05-29-2021, 3:17 PM
Time for a PIP?
458624
Side view..
458625
Seen from the back end....
458626
Seen from the drawer end...
458627
Drawer does slide easy enough...had to dress it down along the sides a hair..
458628
Cleaned and re-arranged the shop a bit...put a rag on top of the tablesaw...
458629
Brushed on the 1st coat of Clear Gloss Poly.....will flip over and varnish the top, once the underside is done...
458630
Had to spin it around, to get a better access to the other side of the base....

Stay tuned....letting this dry a day...

Steven,

Nice job, and I like the bead detail on the corners of the legs, as also the grain match for the top.

Thank you for the post. As always I learned something from the build. It will be nice to see the top once you have finish on it.

Thanks and regards,

Stew

Waiting on 2nd coat to dry, now....
458707
While waiting on the clothes dryer to get done..

steven c newman
05-30-2021, 10:20 PM
Rubbed down, hauled upstairs...and outside to the Gazebo...
458713
Top is nice and shiny..
458714
Back end is a bit wild grain looking..
458715
Drawer does indeed work quite well...
458716
Think I can call this one done?

steven c newman
06-02-2021, 12:45 PM
Apparently, table has been "accepted" by the Boss...
458838
Even put a paper plate under the flower pot, to protect the top of the table.....need to go shopping for a few coasters...to set my beer on......and maybe something to sit plates of food on, when we grill out?
