I've been restoring a Millers Falls 75 plane--part of my father's estate. Is there supposed to be a chip breaker? When I tighten the cap, there's still play in the blade. Also, any comments on the quality of this plane? I never heard of Millers Falls before.

Shouldn't be a chip breaker. Millers Falls were very good tools.

There should be a screw holding down the cap. Tighten the screw to get the cap to hold the blade solid.

Love my MF planes. Several sites dedicated to them. Here’s one.

Thought I had one...went to the shop and checked....had to dust it off a bit...but

When in doubt, check the side of the plane..
454644
Plane is just a "knock-off" of a Stanley No. 220
454645
Not much to this plane, under the hood...
454646
Has a decent sized ramp for the iron to rest on..
454647
Logo on the iron..."Solid Tool Steel"

Does not have an adjustable toe....Nor does the bevel up iron have a chipbreaker. Standard angle, bevel up plane. $1.75 when brand new (1938)

cast cap MIGHT have been black, this one came in a red colour...
