Veneering a box - one face light wood, the other face dyed black

Hi,

As the subject indicates, I'd like to try my hand at having 5 sides of a box a black dyed wood (maple) and the 6th side a light wood (also maple). Would I simply dye the maple first, then treat it as a typical veneer glue up? If not, how else would I ensure zero dye leakage from one maple sheet to the other?

An option besides the ones you mentioned would be to veneer the box, seal and finish the clear face, and then dye the other faces.

You can purchase black dyed veneer. The advantage is that it's the same color through the veneer so if you sand it it won't change color. It's almost impossible to get dye to soak evenly through home made veneer.

I'd veneer the wood before making the box.
