I turn on a Oneway my father had. 5 or so years before I had it shipped to me, I had bought a Grizzly G0462. I did not use it much, was a bit uncomfortable using it and put it away. I was thinking about using it just for finishing in a relatively dust free environment. So I started it up. The lowest speed on it is 600 rpm. That is way to fast for a lowest speed in my book. No wonder it was scary to use.

I agree that 600 rpm is too fast for sanding. I have an old Rockwell/Delta 46-111 wood lathe. It's slowest speed is 990 rpm. It has 4 pulleys and to change the speed, you change the fan belt on the pulleys, like a drill press. I retired it to a Bealle buffing station.

Might be OK for spindle work. You might could throttle back a bit with a rheostat, if you could get your hands on one for cheap (not so likely). Or for polishing/sharpening, as Robert has done.

Standard single phase motors and rheostats don't mix.
